Feb 2018 - $30.00
Basic campground. Utilities worked well. Host very friendly. Last year we had a rooster that woke us up. This year we moved to the other side and had no problem. WiFi worked pretty good. - Chuck McC
Aug 2017 - $30.00
Better than you would expect for a small town. Park is only a couple of years old and everything reflects that. The staff was very friendly and extremely helpful, even had a young man come out and ask if we needed him to help us set up. Not much going on hear but a great place for a day or two. - mfcros
Jan 2017 - $19.00
Small town campground. Mostly permanents. Staff very helpful. People were very friendly. Rate reflects discount due to staying 1 week. Sites mostly grass, no tables. WiFi and cable both worked very good. Free wake-up service by a rooster that lives next door. We would stay here again. - Chuck McC
Apr 2016 - $28.00
Hillshade RV park is just off Highway 90 Alt, or a straight-shot from just about anywhere and it seems to be a secret Texas has kept well-hidden.
The Park itself is privately nestled in its own cove of trees and grasslands.
A simple roadway runs through the grounds. "Back-in" lots are regularly used by long-term campers while "pull-through" lots are kept ready for shorter stays.
To its east, and out my front bedroom window, the morning sun emerges from a grand hillside crowded with timber and natural life. Dazzling and vibrant greens dance across the ground, coming brilliantly to life in the morning rays.
After falling in love with the area, it was easy to pay the modest monthly rate $350 for such an incredible find. Weekly and daily rates are available and just as affordable.
It's easy to see why the locals love this spot, and traveling workforces flock to it.
The campground hosts and owners keeps the place very clean, well-mowed, and personally welcomes each guest. He also keeps the campground equipped with a strong wi-fi signal that grants campers with a reliable high speed connection and measures to throttle abusers.
I highly recommend this R.V. Park to anyone. - Robert Strasser
Jan 2016 - $12.00
We were flooded out of another campground and ended up at this one. Owners very nice and responded to problems quickly. Very old park that has never been updated. Half permanent residents and half electrical workers. Bathrooms and laundry and landscaping needed cleaning. Many many loose dogs roaming around area. We were unable to walk our dog without a can of pepper spray and walking stick. Our rate reflected monthly rate. The residents were very friendly though and it was cheap. WiFi was good. We probably wouldn't return. - wendie T
Aug 2015 - $37.00
Hill shade Rv park is subpar to say the least. They are located in a sketchy neighborhood- in which their facilities are open to the public. You have strangers driving through the park and around your campsite. The bathrooms are nasty- dead cockroaches and bugs on the floor, dirty toilets, and I never saw anyone go in there to clean them. They have a dumpster that overflows which causes anyone who is parked down wind of the dumpster to have a unpleasant smell. The owners to don't have a lawn service to upkeep the property and they do not stay on top of it either. Campsites get overgrown and there is a HUGE chigger problem. When it rains too much campsites have 1-2 inches of standing water. The majority of the campsites need more gravel where the Rv's are parked and leveled. - unsaticfied camper
Dec 2018 - $19.00
We stayed first the end of December for several weeks and then came back again the middle of January and paid for a month which lowered the nightly rate down to $14 for a 30 amp full hookup site. The park is run by GBRA (Guadalupe/Blanco River Authority) which is a non-profit government system. We made our reservation less than a week ahead of our arrival and thus did not have to place a deposit. I communicated via email with the office attendant who was prompt in replying and accurate in his information. The reservation process was pretty painless. They don't however accept credit cards at the campground office, it's cash or check only. They even insured the same site on our return visit which was very nice. The roads are gravel/dirt and the site pads are gravel and level. Most of the RV sites are along the north edge of a Pecan grove with a few along the west end and a few also up near the office when you drive in. Utilities are all in good proximity to the sites, with water and electrical at the rear along a fence row which requires a 50 foot water hose minimum. The Guadalupe Rivers runs along the south border of the campground with access for paddling sports. The lake is dry as stated due to dam failure and our understanding is that there is no plans for repair in the near future. The restroom/shower house was adequately kept, but was a dark green which made it like a dungeon. We did use it. During our stays, the park was never full, with weekends being a bit more busy. We prefer public campgrounds for the quiet and natural settings and this park is one of our favorites. We never had issues with rowdy campers during our stays. The birds and deer were abundant. We didn't really fish the river so I cant comment on that. The current was quite swift as we had plenty of rain. - Uncledon
Oct 2016 - $32.00
The staff is friendly and the park is clean/quiet. The internal roads are tight and very little artificial lights in the area. So if you arrive at night keep a sharp eye out for the big trees next to the roadways. If your looking for a nice place to lay low for a few days, you might want to check this park out. - Pigcrib
Apr 2016 - $14.00
Stayed three nights in early April with friends camping adjacent. Park was not full for a weekend, so was very quiet. This is a very nice park in the Guadalupe River bottom shaded with beautiful enormous Pecan trees. Access to the Guadalupe River for fishing. The Lake was drained for repairs to the dam to be completed later this year, but we were not planning to use the lake. Lots of birds in the trees. Very well maintained grassy areas. One spot on the loop road through the park was too narrow for our small RV, but no problem getting out the other direction. A small camp store with basic supplies and friendly staff during check-in. - Texas E-S
Jul 2009 - $30.00
Park owners are very helpful and friendly. The main problem with this park is that there are too many junky permanent residents. The marina is really just a beer joint for the locals as it sits in a neighborhood, but it was very clean and newly constructed. The owner cooks up a really great cheeseburger! There were some intoxicated troublemakers swimming and drinking with loud music next door, but they finally went away at dusk. Not sure that they were residents. The grounds are shady and beautiful and the owners are working hard, but they need to get rid of the rowdy alcohol crowd and create a more mainstream RV park atmosphere if this is their intention. - flyingvranch
Feb 2009 - $30.00
The owners were very friendly. With that said: the bar on the property can be very noisy, with intoxicated people roaming about. I fished quite a lot and never had a bite. Would be an alright overnight stop if you could get near the water and away from the bar. - JPL
Aug 2008 - $40.00
Everyone was so friendly! The park wonderful. I loved the fishing. The park also has a boat launch. - ktennant
Nov 2009 - $30.00
This is the second time we stayed here. The owner is very helpful and friendly . If you like to fish for bass this is the place: catch and release only. They don't have public bathrooms or showers yet, but they are in the plans for the future. - JPL
Mar 2009 - $30.00
This was a brand new park when we visited . We came for a week and for $225 we stayed for the month. They have a great fishing pond stocked with bass, perch, and catfish; catch and release only. They have stores nearby and laundry a quarter mile down the road. Owners are very friendly and great helping the kids fish. - JPL
Nov 2018 - $33.00
Nice to pull in at dusk and have the office open and friendly. Yes, as previously mentioned, this is an older park with full-timers, not all neatly kept, but our area was acceptable. WiFi a bit overwhelmed I think, but our Sprint Hotspot worked great. We had good AT&T and Verizon coverage as well. Our site would not have worked for a larger rig but we found a level spot for us. We would over nite here again. - MsLucy
May 2018 - $35.00
Nice lady at office but this park is too small for the large rigs! - bonniesoo
Mar 2018 - $35.00
excellent older park - quiet - and will be very shady in the late spring and summer - good view of the river from the first two rows of camp sites - some full time residents with lots of stuff around - no dog park which is a bummer - and hubby used the showers and said they were not as clean as he might have liked - not sure how often they are cleaned. We would go back here - just for the quiet and views of the river. - EllieMae Erskine
Nov 2017 - $25.00
Didn't stay here, but it is closed this date due to Hurricane Harvey damage. Desk said there are a lot of uprooted trees along the river and road damage, but the city is working on it to clean up the mess.
Admin note: Following from the City of Gonzales as of November 15, 2017.
"DUE TO THE DAMAGE SUSTAINED FROM HURRICANE HARVEY, THE RV PARK AT THE INDEPENDENCE GOLF COURSE WILL NOT BE OPEN FOR OCCUPANTS UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. PLEASE CALL JB WELLS FROM 7AM TO 4PM AT (830)672-6558 TO CHECK RV SPACE AVAILABILITY." - NiceHandTick
Nov 2016 - $25.00
Nice city park on the banks of the Guadalupe river, close to downtown Gonzalez. We stayed in one of the pull-through sites which was fairly level. Several of the back-in sites looked very small and not very level. Sites are mostly shaded and interior roads are gravel. The city park also has a golf course, and you make reservations there. We would definitely stay here again. - barrettjl
