The first site we were assigned #61 would have been adequate if the 30 outlet had been good but evidently had a high resistance connection and finally went out all together, we assigned our selves to site 60 and it functioned as advertised. The park seems to be run down pretty much with a low water crossing closed, apparently it had washed out and not repaired. If I had to guess, our state officials are diverting money that should be going to the parks to other projects. Texas seems to be great at that. Can't really fault the park for that. We camped at Abilene State Park in a Motorhome.

We stayed at site 52 which was asphalt, level and mostly shaded. Had 50 amp service and water hookups with a dump station close. This is a gem. We camped at Abilene State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Go into Abilene to see Frontier Texas. It is a cool museum all about west Texas and especially how the buffalo were in the area previously by the 100’s of thousands before buffalo hunters killed them off.

This is a beautiful park. Our site was very shady. The Brushy Trail sites have lots of shade, which is great in the Texas summer. We visited the pool twice, very nice. The bird blind was filled with all types of birds. The trails are nice, but most are easy. We had good AT&T cell phone reception, we did not try the TV or WiFi. This is our second visit to this park, and we will try to go back at least once a year, during the pool season. We camped at Abilene State Park in a Travel Trailer.

This was our first time at Abilene State Park, and we liked all the camping loops, however it's not really big rig friendly. There are only 3 sites with full hook-ups, but lots of trees provide plenty of shade at most sites. The pool isn't open every day, but looked clean and inviting. There are several trails to walk that are pretty well maintained and a bird blind where we enjoyed watching a variety of beautiful birds, including several pairs of Painted Buntings. We did drive over to the lake, but were very disappointed: the roads around the lake are appalling, just rock, lots of craters and the ground is so overgrown, we barely saw the tops of the few picnic tables because the weeds were so tall. A burn ban was in effect, so sadly no evenings around the campfire, but we were visited every morning and evening by several white tail deer who seemed as fascinated by us as we were with them, particularly the little fawns! We camped at Abilene State Park in a Travel Trailer.

We were there for an extra long weekend - Wednesday-Sunday. Park was pretty quiet. Swam in the pool a couple of days and it was pretty clean, but had a lot of wasps around the pool. We camped in #81. It was shaded for breakfast but no shade for the rest of the day. I would not recommend this space in the summer. Positive side - it was very close to the shower house. Overall nice campground! Nice state park, close to Buffalo Gap and Abilene. Sites are wooded and well spaced. However, they are not very level. The pads are asphalt but the surrounding area is dirt and can be very muddy after rain. It was very quiet and peaceful when we stayed. We camped at Abilene State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Abilene State Park has trails for hiking and a swimming pool open in the summer. Lake Abilene is across the highway and has fishing, canoe and kayaking. The town of Buffalo Gap has a historic village. Perini Steakhouse is about 3 miles from the park for a wonderful meal.

We stayed at Abilene State Park for 9 weeks volunteering as Park Host. Staff friendly and very helpful. All sites have ample room. Park has over 3 site loops with various options, but only 3 sites for rent with full hook-ups. Park is loaded with white tail deer that mid-week come right up to your camper. Park has lots of smaller trails and a large one up at the lake. We loved staying here except for the WiFi and cell service(we use Verizon) and this is an AT&T area. Park also has a popular in the summer swimming pool (not open during our stay). Park rents out canoes and kayaks in the summer too. Another thing about this park is the amount of birds that come and stay, a must see is the bird blind. We camped at Abilene State Park in a Motorhome.

Abilene only 30 minutes away, any shopping needed is there. Couple of great grocery stores H.E.B and Market Street have the best produce. A must see is historic district of Abilene and the Tourist information center a must see is Frontier Texas. Abilene Zoo was ok too. Spent a day down in San Angelo that was a good day trip.

We were with a group in the Wagon Circle and it was perfect for us as we could all visit in the center grassy area and had our group supper in the hall, which is very well equipped. Our group moved on but we had to stay to take care of a medical emergency. It was a good place to be stuck, a pleasant environment and plenty of nature trails to walk our two dogs. It was fun to see families and friends enjoying all the park amenities. Plus, the rangers could not have been more accommodating, directing us to reputable medical care, helping us figure out the cheapest way to stay, even checking to make sure our air conditioner was running for our dogs when we were gone to the hospital all day. They have wifi, which is rare in a state park, but it is nearly useless. Of the three bathhouses, the one at Brushy Trail has the largest and cleanest showers. The water is hot and the pressure is good. We camped at Abilene State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

The paper trail map is not accurate and does not have distances. Ask for a color trails map, it is much better. Almost all amenities are about 17 miles north in Abilene, although there is a small grocery store in Buffalo Gap. Don't miss the Frontier Texas Museum, even if you don't like museums.

We often stop at Abilene State Park when headed through west Texas and did so last night. It is alway clean, well care for, and the personnel are friendly and helpful. Brushy Trail section is woodsy and home to deer and other wildlife. Sites are asphalt and fairly level, and are water and 50 amp electric only. There is a dump and trash station conveniently located. If you are a walker or biker, there are some hiking trails; in addition, the park has a lovely swimming pool. The price is right at $18 per night. We have stayed in several of the sites over the years in Brushy Trail, but last night we were in #58. We stayed here in a 40' Fifth Wheel. We camped at Abilene State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

This park is just outside of Abilene, Texas, where you will find plenty of options for food, groceries, and other needs. Abilene has a great, really great zoo - one of the best giraffe exhibits I have seen anywhere.

We occupied one of the few full hookup sites. There is an amazing amount of shade in this park. The RV pad was a mix of very old asphalt and dirt. Our sewer connection was above grade. Thirty amp only. There was good water pressure. The site could have used some daily maintenance. The setting is very pretty. We enjoyed the hiking trails and CCC structures. The check-in staff were friendly and helpful. Some CCC structures (picnic tables, some benches and stairway to the pool) need maintenance, specifically the removal of dirt and weeds, in order to preserve them. They are too priceless to ignore. We did not use the pool but it was beautiful and seemed to be well-maintained. We camped at Abilene State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Price includes $15 for E/W site in Pecan Grove (suitable for smaller rigs) plus $5 daily visit fee. Larger sites in Oak Grove and Brushy Trail go for $18/night plus the daily fee. Be careful of low branches if you have a tall rig. Most sites are pretty level and very spacious, with lots of vegetation between for privacy (except in the Wagon Circle loop, which is very open). Most of the picnic tables are on cement patios. Restrooms are dated but clean. Good over-the-air TV and Verizon signals. We camped at Abilene State Park in a Motorhome.

We pulled into Abilene Texas State Park yesterday and are just enjoying the day here. The park is well shaded and there is a lovely swimming pool for the warm afternoons. It appears that they are cleaning up after some weather incident, but even so, the park is very well maintained. Pads are fairly level asphalt. Each site has a picnic table located on a concrete patio - no covering needed with the great shade. This park gives easy access to Abilene where you will find everything you might need; Wal-Mart, grocery stores, Abilene Mall, health services, etc. Just on the edge of west Texas, the sunsets here are pretty spectacular. Our site had water/50amp/dump station. Almost all of the state parks in Texas are good places to stop along the way to wherever. http://tpwd.texas.gov/ We camped at Abilene State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

We stayed here two nights on our way home from five days at Palo Duro Canyon ST.Park. Since we made last minute reservations we where put in to the "Overflow" area, which we had no problem with since we made these reservations on such short notice. With that being said I would not like to do overflow again as it was very close quarters and no privacy, but they told us that ahead of time, so no surprise, just would not prefer to do that again. We did go around checking out the regular campsites and for the most part all looked pretty good, tent and R.V. sites. Lots of shade trees and fairly level sites. If we come back this way again we would definitely like to get one of those sites. We had water and electricity 30/50 amp in our overflow site. Campground was very family friendly and has a very nice swimming pool ! Cost two dollars per person to use pool (open 11 am to 3 pm then reopens at 4pm to 7pm. Being a hot summer day it was crowded (the pool) very nice ,clean pool though. Park employees very friendly and helpful. The fee for camping was only eight dollars for the two nights , but that reflects a 50% discount coupon I had for buying state park pass. We camped at Abilene State Park in a Travel Trailer.

One of the big draws for me was 1) Lake Abilene is just a mile down the road and entry is included in your camping fee. Fishing from shore and boats. You can rent kayaks at campground. 2) Perini Ranch steakhouse is just three miles down the road !! Had an awesome cowboy cut ribeye, my wife had catfish and my son had ribs. All top notch. We ate indoors in the a/c but there is also partial shade seating outside too and live music (outside) Ya gotta go there if you like steak. One of the best steakhouses in Texas !

Buffalo gap historic village, Vletas candies in Abilene.

I highly recommend buying Texas state park pass, it has saved us a lot of money not only at Abilene state park but also at Palo Duro, and Garner state park so far.. discount on camping, purchases in camp store and daily entry fee (which you still have to pay on top of camping fee ) is waived with pass.

On a weekday, when school in still in session, this is an excellent place for an over night stop or as a destination location for a few nights. I've never been here on a weekend. The park could be difficult to locate the first time. Find Buffalo Gap and then follow the signs, carefully. The Pecan loop has excellent, and spacious sites, for RV trailers or motorhomes. Most are level, and will easily accommodate a twenty four foot motorhome. The utilities are excellent and well placed. There is no sewer connection for the Pecan loop sites. The big negative here is the restroom. It is centrally located within the loop, but way to small for the potential number of people. The restroom is in need of a major renovation. There are plenty of trails here for biking or hiking. The place is dark at night, as it should be. There are an assortment of natural night sounds here including a chorus of Poorwills, and frogs. These pleasant sounds can be vastly disturbed by the occasional flyover by a B-1 Bomber. We camped here in a Motorhome, and we will return again next May.
