I was here to attend an airshow event and had to park in an overflow area for two reasons. One is that the CG is completely full of permanents and the other is that sites are open only to active duty National Guard members. Retirees are not permitted. Even if that were the case, the park would not be on my list of acceptable campgrounds. There is only one authorized entrance to the military base and it is some distance from the campground. Most of the sites are for smaller RVs (30 ft or less) and many are un-level. It is more or less a sardine can with little room to maneuver into the sites. They do have full hook-ups and some shade. I did not see a bathhouse. Check in is at the lodging office and that is not well marked, which makes it difficult to find. Normal rates is shown, but overflow is free. - RLM

We drove through this park on a Saturday. There is another comment that they can accommodate a 40 ft rig. We never saw one that could accommodate anything larger than a 30 ft trailer if that. Although the price is good for the area, I cannot recommend this park unless you are ready for many people, lots of noise and very crowded conditions. We would not consider returning to this park. It is also quite a distance outside the main part of the city and not really handy for doing the tourist thing. - TravelingAdams
Mar 2012 - $25.00
Nice, trees, grass with paved sites, but old. No pull throughs. Rate was for a lakefront site, non-lakefront (50 feet from the lake) was $20. Plus there is a $5 vehicle fee. TV reception was excellent. No Wi-Fi but our Verizon cell and broadband worked well. Quiet except for the invasion of boats Sat AM. We didn't stay on Sunday. Park gates close and are locked from 10PM to 7AM so don't plan on staying outside the park too late,or getting an early start! Twenty minutes or so to central Austin. We will return to take in more of what Austin has to offer. - rncordy

Great City park with 20 RV sites with water & 50/30/15 amp pedestals, and another 46 tent sites. Roads & Parking Spots are asphalt. Parking Spots are wide, but not real long. All are back-in. Tight Roads, but do-able. Entrance road has lots of hills and curves and is 2-lane. Roads could use some maintenance. Our site was right on the water at Lake Austin. We like staying there, just wish it was easier to get into. All sites are first come, first serve and there is an extra vehicle charge, $5 M-T, $8 F-S & Holidays. Get in mid-week & you should not have a problem getting a site. Check the sites before you pay to be sure you can fit if you are in a diesel pusher. - JIMNJAN

Great location for Austin city visit. Walking distance to park and lake and restaurants and music venues. Very few sites available. Many longer term residents. Some with sitting areas and flowers and lights. Be aware that driving into Austin city area may be a little intimidating. - 1coloradan

This RV park on the south side of the river is very handy to touring downtown Austin and has easy access to the river trails. We like to walk and were able to access many places on foot. The park itself was tough to get to in our 40' motorhome towing a full-sized pickup. Although we had a decent pull through space we could not negotiate the turn into the site without unhooking. The aisle to our site was overhung with a very low power line, which had to be lifted (by the very helpful park manager) so that we could pass! - JanW
Jul 2017 - $45.00
Within minutes of pulling in, we were invited by a neighbor to a cook out. That is how friendly folks are in the older, quirky campground. Campers reserve months in advance for the few spots open to short term visitors, but we lucked into a gap of a few days when one site was open. Don't expect an RV resort. This is a crowded, older, delightful campground right in the thick of where the action is. They only take cash or checks. - ShoreXplorers

We have been extremely disappointed in this park. We were told our payment was lost, although the check had been cashed. Our power pole was in such terrible shape that it ruined both our plug and power converter. The property managers are unfriendly and very hard to get hold of. Many residents have dirty, junk filled sites. - Airstream in Austin
Apr 2012 - $26.00
This is an old park with lots of permanent residents. However, we found that all the facilities worked, the families there were quiet and pleasant to be around. Lots of children, but very well controlled. Laundry room was large, clean and well equipped. Price was excellent for the area. Our Verizon worked well here, so we didn't use the WiFi. However, there is WiFi for free in the park if you can get it. We could not as we were in a back row. We paid for a week and the price reflects that. - TravelingAdams
Mar 2012 - $30.00
Turn around and run. Staff is jittery and the park is full of long term residents with little pride in their environment. Amenities are far from most sites and there is no common area. Scary chain link fence surrounds the property that is adjacent to the freeway. - AliRV

I'm sorry to say this park was a disappointment for us. Having seen it was acquired by Sun RV Resorts, we really expected the sites to be very nice. They were basic, nothing great about them in any way. Unfortunately we were visiting during a time of a lot of rain and our site (any many more) aren't setup to drain properly and it was a muddy, messy quagmire. Apparently the park has a dispute going on (as stated in their brochure) with the local cable companies, so there is no cable TV. We used our satellite and put up the over the air antenna which did bring in local stations in good digital reception. We have dogs and the dog park is nice... only issue again was very little drainage, so to get in, you had to walk through 3-4" of standing water which soaked our shoes. This park is really ready for an upgrade and I hope Sun spends the money to make it happen. Texas DOT is in the middle of a LOT of work on the frontage road at and near this park. Pulling out of the park both for day trips and in your RV is a real challenge as they close one lane and traffic is way too heavy for the road. People are in such a hurry, they won't necessarily give you a break and let you out of the park! - bschilz
Oct 2018 - $38.00
The roads in the park are very narrow - packed in - the only view from the front is the back of the unit across from you - can't even see the narrow road. Our site did have a grassy area next to it, but many had only gravel. No patio. The restrooms were nice and clean. A worker escorted us to our site, but tried (unsuccessfully) to insist that he could only give instructions to my husband (b/c he happened to be driving) - a 10 minute directive that could have been covered in 2 minutes! The pool was in front - on the frontage road - loud. The rest of the park was quiet and felt safe. - Deb and Chris
Aug 2018 - $49.00
Spent 3 nights here and the location is decent if you want to get to downtown area. Asked for shade and was put in a spot which had some shade until noon then we roasted until the sun went down. This campground is pretty cramped. The interior roads are excellent but fairly narrow. You need to go all the way to the very rear of the property and come back through the middle to exit and the turns are tight. They could improve egress immensely with a rear exit which isn't onto the VERY busy frontage road which is also under construction with jersey barriers everywhere. Stay off I-35 and use the parallel streets. Road construction is a nightmare in this area. HEB and Walmart are nearby and can be accessed without getting on I-35. - Jeff Smith

Royal Palms should not be considered an RV Park in any way, shape or form. The sites that RVs are placed are rough gravel and not level. There are many rules that are not enforced consistently. If you do break a rule you are fined heavily. There is absolutely no security and break-ins happen frequently. This location is in a very dangerous area of Austin with drugs users and vagrants. Park staff and management are extremely rude to RVers. The park is not friendly, not fun and not safe. I would not recommend this establishment to anyone. - Hard working people changing the skyline
Feb 2017 - $50.00
Royal Palms is a Royal Pain! We have stayed there for three years now, but this year there is new management and they are atrocious. They are nasty and will lie to your face without a thought.
Parking? They decided to charge you for a sticker to park in the lot you have paid to rent. Then they will tow you if you park in the street or on the gravel in front of your trailer. The guy who took our space when we left told us he was towed before he finished setting up the trailer.
Early this year they raised the rent with no notice, then added a $23 fee for garbage collection, something what had been included in the rent. Then they informed us we had to rake the leaves and water the trees (with water we have to purchase from them!) or we would be fined.
Physically, the park is well kept and the neighbors are great, but save yourself a lot of grief and stay away from the Royal Palms. - Ralph Hunt

Airport and Highway Noise. Really a Mobile Home Park, which rents out uncommited gravel pads. Shower and Restroom are only available during business hours like after 9 am. Check in is a zoo, with a lot of confusion. $48 rate and offers no club discounts. We only stayed here because Austin was pretty sold out. You stay here, it is your own fault! - Sir_Charles395

Nov 2018 - $25.00
Beware of the pull thru sites. They have a mean bend that prevents a fifth wheel from maneuvering in them. There are many trees so watch out for overhanging branches. The 30-amp electric and water hookups worked fine. The dump station was easy to use. Watch out for a coyote in the campground. The campground is very nice and the trail along the falls is pleasant. The campground phone was out of order and the staff seemed quite happy about it. There is no WiFi. The fire ring and picnic tables are at a ridiculous distance at the back of the campsite. - Melodycthomas

McKinney Falls State Park is on the outskirts of Austin. Compared to most "urban" campgrounds, it rocks. The state park is nice. It's on the outskirts of Austin. A few hiking trails, a couple of swimming holes. The campground is mostly older. Sites tend to be small. Some are level, some aren't. You don't get assigned a site until you get there. The first site we were assigned was a lovely site. Level and spacious. But it was next to a family group that had 6 adults and 15-20 preschool age kids. Seriously, they had four cars parked in the site, and a lot of their toys and stuff had already migrated into what was supposed to be our site. We didn't want any of that, so we went back to the registration and got another site. The second site was a pull through, but it was small, and really meant for tent camping. We were able to get our small motorhome level on it, but it was challenging. The picnic table and rest of our site was 30 feet away, and we ended up not using it. For the price (including $6 per person per day park entry fee), it was fine, but we weren't overly impressed. Both Verizon and AT&T were fine. - AnnP
May 2018 - $24.00
This is an average State Park. It is starting to show its age, roads and sites need a little work, new asphalt and leveling. The greenery could use some trimming. All in all, this is a fine place to stay for a few days to visit Austin. Great walking and hiking trails, the falls are nice, there are programs in the park through-out the week. There is about 10 sites with 50 amp, the rest are 30 amp. Sprint worked well, the pup loved walking the trails. We saw deer, a coyote, a Great Road Runner bird, along with other birds, all at our campsite. We would stay here again. - Living the Dream

Old park that needs improvements. Only RV site on the lake with hook-ups, but the beach is all rock. Kind of pricey for the shape it is in. - fireball
