Review would have been much better except for restroom problems. There are 2 restroom buildings and 2 shower/restroom buildings. We used 1 restroom and both showers. The contractor who cleans the restrooms gives them a quick mopping, and goes on. Toilets had mold in them and were not cleaned in the 5 days we were there. Trash was not emptied and was left of the restroom floors. The toilets in the shower houses were stainless steel with no seats and looked as though they came from a prison. Stalls (men's and women's in the shower in the center of the CG had no latches (and no door, in one shower). The North shower was in better shape, but still dirty. Aside from the restroom problems, this is a wonderful place. The sites are spread out along the lake for a mile or so. Most are 30 amp but some near the boat ramp are 50. A few, like site 8, are several hundred feet from their neighbor. In early February, most are vacant. Most back to the water or the cypress swamp that borders the lake. There are well marked trails in the interior of the CG loop plus fire roads to walk. The nearby state park has additional trails and canoe rentals. There is a kids' fishing pond stocked with rainbow trout. On Thursday - Sunday, there was a truck selling some of the best shrimp I have ever had at the US190/TX92 intersection a few miles from the CG. - John McHugh

Though this is a beautiful park, the contractor that has the concession made it a miserable stay. They circled around our RV and car again and again blowing dust all over us. They then threatened to cause more problems the next day. He also stated multiple times that he made much more money than I did. We will not return to this park no matter how long we stay in Texas. We also will not go to the neighboring park on this lake. We strongly recommend avoiding this park. - geode
Nov 2017 - $8.00
This is a very nice COE park located on the west side of BA Steinhagen Lake. Very nice gate attendants and host, park is kept very clean and neat. Rules appear to be enforced. There was ACE staff presence here, we saw the ranger numerous times as well as maintenance people. Sites are well spaced and allow for privacy and quiet. Water pressure was good, electric was steady. There is a little fishing lake for the kids. Great birding here, deer and fox wander the grounds. The trail system is very nice, cleverly laid out, not too easy and provides a good walk thru the woods. We enjoyed our time in this park and would return again. - Fixn2gocamp

The owner of this park has passed away and his wife is running it for now. The park is clean but if you want to use the restrooms you must ask for a key. - glbaker44

People were friendly in the park. Small park but all were pull throughs. Easy to move around in. We would stay here again. No concrete pads. - mary beth

This is a hidden gem. You are treated like family from the start. 3 potlucks a week and music on the weekends. You really need to play or like old Country, bluegrass or Gospel. Take the road very slow (they work hard to maintain it). It is 3 miles of mud, dust and dirt but it is passable. It is a very unique park. Come open minded. We will come back again and again for 2 weeks or less. - MrDarcy
Nov 2013 - $20.00
The campground is at the end of a 3 mile pig trail. I say that because this is not a county road. No gravel, culverts, or upkeep. I almost bogged down leaving. The Wi-Fi is very, very slow. The park is known for playing music and eating. If you don't mind getting a little mud on the tires, then no problem. - Jloftin
Jan 2012 - $18.00
This was the most wonderful RV park we've ever stayed at! Their theme is bluegrass music. Saturdays in the winter anyway, a bunch of residents and locals play bluegrass all day and most of the evening. It's too far off the beaten track to have too many people. And if you're more than 20 feet from the place they're playing, you can't hear them, so if you want quiet it is. Geezer, it's a great place and the management couldn't be more friendly. (and some sing) - debob

Great place to get away. We were there for 4 nights and there were probably less than 10 other campers any night we were there. Lots of trees at this park, so if you need satellite you need to chose wisely. All the trails were closed while we were there but just walking around the campground itself can be very pleasant. There was a little road noise, but not bad. - joe_jack
May 2018 - $20.00
Only spent one night here on this trip. Will definitely come back for a longer stay. We were in space 213 - which had electric and water. The site backed up to the lake. OTA was limited, and we could not get any DISH channels due to trees (other sites were able to). ATT worked fine, but no Sprint. Staff at station were super helpful and there were plenty of hikes available. - Davishouse2
Mar 2018 - $20.00
We have been here three times in our Mini Winnie travel trailer. November 2015 in number 201, February 2017 in number 202 and then March 2018 in number 312. They were are nice spots. 312 was especially nice since it was a pull-through. We have always had a nice experience at Martin Dies. We lived in the area (Spurger) and I have friends in Jasper so we also visit them. The rangers have always been very nice and it is a wonderful place to just sit back and chill. - Cirrus

Nice quite park, very large site. - Goldwinger
May 2018 - $16.00
This is a nice park on a lake setting the reason for the poor rating is as follows. The rest rooms are in need of an update and I only saw 2 bath houses for the whole campground. The interior roads are not marked so you end up passing your road and have to back track. The host are not very helpful or friendly. When I checked in I was told I could enter from either end of road to get to my pull through site but anyone that has an RV knows you can only enter from one direction for the utilities to be on the right side. On the plus side it is a quite park considering there is hardly any security around. - jgard
Apr 2018 - $15.00
Very quiet, tucked away right around Lake Steinhagen. I have stayed here many times and always get the same pull-thru site. A lot of the sites are very long and will accommodate a very long rig. However, they do have some rather short sites as well. The only drawback here is that there are no sewer hookups! Bummer. . .but they do have a dump station as you are leaving the campground. The only reason I did not give a "10" all the way around was because of the lack of sewer connections. Otherwise, this is a great place for peace and quiet. - Mr Bates

Upkeep is below average, but the bath house is being refurbished. Every time I have been there, it is about 10% full, so watch for wasps in the electric box. Website is misleading, it shows 3 types of sites, but you are restricted to the pull thru motor home sites when you get there, even if your trailer is smaller than most fold out trailers. Campground staff is not highly motivated toward customer service. Casino is now open, but no comped stays. Bring your food, casino food isn't all that great. I had a complaint about the price, talked to the casino host, he gave me slot credit to cover it. At least the Casino cares about what you think. The lake needed more rain, and grass trimming along the shore. - Friz

The best part of this park is the website. They have never heard of under promise and over deliver. Its all over promise and under deliver. I was so shocked at the primitiveness of this campground when I arrived. Its not that I wouldn't stay at a place like this but I would be prepared for a low rate. The shock at the difference between website and reality was substantial, hard to win me back once you have me drive 20 miles out of the way. The entrance road is potholed and thin, I'm in a 24' class C, I don't know if I would attempt this in a big rig. I pulled in and found that I couldn't get any of 3 electric outlets to work in row C or the water, I even checked the breaker box and there were no breakers for row C? I then remembered that the man on the phone says that I should pull into row B. The only site I saw in row B had a large wood platform for lack of a better word to combat what appeared to be a giant pond on the site when it rained. Big rains were coming that is why I was finding a place to pull in for the night, so that didn't seem like a good idea. I left a message at the number I had originally called, about the lack of electric and never got a call back. Its 3 hours later, still no call. Fortunately, I am at a state park that let me slip in for 1 night because they felt bad I had been directed to Indian Springs. Seems this is a common response. I went to look at the ladies room, didn't have the courage for the men room, and it hadn't been cleaned in a very, very, long time and if I had to bet on it I would say the hot water didn't work but I didn't check to find out. By the way. As I looked around and tried to get settled the one unit out of maybe 8, that had anyone home, didn't make any attempt to help or console. So friendliness isn't why you go here. The good points. The property is secluded and quiet. There are some donkeys and a cow on property that at least made me feel like I wasn't invisible. The barn, looks nice from what I can see but all the blinds were drawn and big locks on every door. Big Thicket is very close. - TheIntuitionTour

Arrived late, but got good service when registering. Lady was very friendly. Site was longer than my unit needed. I only plugged into electric, not using the other facilities. Left early in the A.M., and did not use the park's other facilities. Will stay here again on my return trip. - eddieelk
Dec 2009 - $25.00
We overnighted here with the intention of staying a day or two, but after seeing the park, we opted to move on. It was rainy and muddy, so there was lots of mud tracked in the restrooms. They looked as though a complete cleaning had not been done in sometime. The ads we saw and Woodall's description greatly overstated the condition of this park. It is very junky and run down. Don't think we will be back. - stonybirch

They really only have 2 pull through sites and they are end to end. We were there for 1 night and were lucky as there was no one else in the second pull through site. Nothing special about this park as almost all the sites are long term occupancy. It worked for us as it it right by US 190. Water pressure was good and so was voltage. Wifi worked pretty well and they have free ice and a free use of a large washer and dryer. - zrxh14

One of 3 campgrounds in the Angelina National Forest, the other 2 being Caney Creek and Sandy Creek. Water spigots available but no hook-ups. Generators are allowed -- quiet time is from 10PM-6AM. Small lake (~9 acres) with swimming area roped off. Small creeks from springs located throughout park. No playground. Some campsites with grill and/or fire ring, lantern hook, asphalt driveways. First come, first served. - happybooker1
