BLM CG still on FCFS basis. Heavily used by mountain biking fans with trails adjacent to CG. No amenities except very clean pit toilets and large garbage dumpster. NO water. New section for NON-RVs with 20+ sites and group sites being developed. Usually full by mid-morning during high season for cycling. We camped at Horse Thief Campground - BLM in a Travel Trailer.

Awesome, less busy campground between Arches, Dead Horse and Canyonland Island in Sky. Be self sufficient, no amenities. Great for VanLifers biking in area, trails right out of camp. We camped at Horse Thief Campground - BLM in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Arrive early if you can, less busy than some camps but still Moab gets swamped. Great biking right out of camp. Provision up in Moab, it’s about 45 minute drive each way

Stayed for four days just to camp and use solar system on 5th wheel. It was their off season so very few people were there. Wide sites, most would take up to 40 foot unit. No water, electric or sewer but clean pit toilets, they cleaned every two days. It was the best BLM camp ground I have stayed at in several years. It was some what remote from Moab but that was what I wanted. I have a 34 foot 5th wheel and would definitely stay again. $15.00 per night and $7.50 with a Golden Age Passport card. We camped at Horse Thief Campground - BLM in a Fifth Wheel.

Close to Canyon Land, if you are looking for all conveniences this is not the place, go to an RV park and spend money and have noise and traffic.

We stayed at this park since we planned to stay two nights and to visit both Canyonlands and Arches from one campsite. The campground is in the middle of nowhere (a plus in my opinion). The only complaint is the entry road and roads within the campground are dusty and gravel. Anytime someone drove in or out, there was a big dust cloud turned up. Other than that, very good and well worth the $15/night. The sites are spacious and level and there is a nice fire pit and picnic table. The north entrance of Canyonlands was about 10 minutes away. Arches entrance was about 30 min. We camped at Horse Thief Campground - BLM in a Travel Trailer.

Date of Stay: October, 2015 - $8.00
Overall Rating:

This is a basic BLM campground with good, wide roads and many large sites. The campground is well-located to visit Dead Horse Point and Canyonlands (about 15-minute drive to either) and not far from Moab (25 minutes). It is an hour to the far end of Arches, so probably better to stay in the very nice Devils Garden campground in the park.

The scenery is wide open and beautiful; it is very quiet and peaceful. Generator hours are 8 AM to 8 PM and we had minimal cell reception and 1X data, even with an outside antenna. Decent cell service just a few miles back up the road toward Moab or Canyonlands. There are several new mountain bike trails from the campground which connect to a larger network of trails in the surrounding desert. One hiking trail nearby, but Dead Horse and Canyonlands have more and better.

There were plenty of sites available when we were there (late October), but the camp host said they had been generally full every night since Labor Day, so a good idea to arrive early. We camped at Horse Thief Campground - BLM in a Fifth Wheel.

Make sure you visit the Dead Horse Point overlooks at sunset or sunrise--the best view of Canyonlands. Slick Rock Campground in north Moab has dump and fill for $5 total.

There are 56 sites with tables, flat tent area, table and fire pit. A place to leave your trash. No water or dump. Campsites are well laid out with lots of bushes to give privacy. There is a camp host but we never met him. The only place near the Island in the Sky that allows RV's larger than 28'. We stayed in a 35' fifth wheel. Campground is ½ mile off the main road down a corrugated dirt road. We camped at Horse Thief Campground - BLM in a Fifth Wheel.

We used this BLM campground as a base for Arches NP, Dead Horse SP and the Island in the Sky district of Canyonlands. It is very handy for all those areas. If you want to explore the Needles district, stay somewhere else. It is a 200 mile roundtrip from Horse Thief. Level gravel pads and easy to get to. Bring your own water and come early. Fills up even in October. We camped at Horse Thief Campground - BLM in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

Great BLM campground close to Canyonlands and Arches National Parks and Deadhorse Point State Park, which is accessed via a 1/2 mile well-graded gravel road from the paved highway. Spacious, fairly private sites are spread out over a mesa amid junipers and pines. This is basic camping with vault toilets (kept clean the entire time we were there) and no other "amenities". Come with a full fresh water tank and an empty holding tank (you can get fresh water for 10 cents a gallon and dump your holding tank for $5 at Arch View Resort, which is just before the turn off to go up to the campground). Each site has a fire pit and picnic table. The campground had several sites available when we came in on a Wednesday, but by the weekend I think it was full. Generators are allowed at some times, but this campground will appeal mostly to those who are looking for a pretty desert campground and a quiet peaceful experience. We would definitely stay here again. Our rate reflects the use of our Senior Access Pass. We camped at Horse Thief Campground - BLM in a Travel Trailer.

Nice alternative to the state or national park campgrounds. Sites are well spaced and the pine and juniper provide privacy and a bit of shade. Rate reflects senior pass. No dump station. We camped at Horse Thief Campground - BLM in a Motorhome.

Great park for exploring Dead Horse Point and Canyonlands National Park Island in the Sky. Sites are gravel, but very level and there was lots of room between us and our neighbors. Campground host is very knowledgeable about the area and gave good suggestions for where to camp on our travels in Utah. This is a very quiet, peaceful setting. Rate reflects our Senior Pass discount. We camped at Horse Thief Campground - BLM in a Fifth Wheel.

This is my kind of campground--large private sites great views and out in the country. But it is very convenient to Arches, Dead Horse, and I-70. It is on the same road as Dead Horse State Park but half the distance from the main highway. Most sites are back ins but they are large enough for big rigs with lots of wiggle room for those who are backing impaired. Hookups are way down on my list of amenities. If they is important to you then opt for one of the many private parks in Moab. We camped at Horse Thief Campground - BLM in a Tent.

The rate is the senior discounted rate. This BLM Campground is on the road to Canyonlands National Park and near Dead Horse Point State Park. It has large, level sites and a very nice view of the distant snow-capped Henry Mountains. There are over 50 sites that filled to capacity three of the four nights we were there. This is dry camping with no utilities of any kind. You can get water in Moab or at the Shell Station near the intersection of 191 and 313, about 20 miles distant from the campground. This is a great campground for people who don’t mind being off the grid, who want a very quiet campground, who enjoy beautiful sunsets and star lit nights. My Verizon phone managed to get a few bars of cell service but data limped along with an occasional 1X connect. The roads and sites are all good gravel and the pit toilets are clean and have no “outhouse” odor. The entrance to the Island in the Sky portion of Canyonlands is nearby as is Dead Horse Point State Park with views you don't want to miss. We camped at Horse Thief Campground - BLM in a Fifth Wheel.

A great campground. Plenty of room and level sites. We were here during one of Moab's busiest weekends of the spring and the campground was completely full. But it was still quiet overnight and we never felt crowded as there's lot's of room between spaces. We camped at Horse Thief Campground - BLM in a Motorhome.

This is a great campground in my opinion, one of the best that BLM offers in this area. Spacious sites for different lengths, lots of restrooms, and great views. It is a dry camping area with no water, dumping, or electric. With a rate of $6 for seniors with Golden Age Pass, it's hard to beat the price. It's a short distance to Dead Horse Point State Park where the rates are 3-5x higher. This makes a good day trip by bicycle or car from here (seven miles away). Bravo to the BLM for providing such campgrounds in an area where commercial campgrounds in Moab are expensive ($35 on average). We camped at Horse Thief Campground - BLM in a Motorhome.

Great location, beautiful setting, quiet spot. No hookups and no water to be found. This is definitely the definition of a primitive site. Our water tank is small, so even without showering, we were out on our third day. Bear that in mind if traveling with a smaller trailer, especially as the closest town Moab, is about an half an hour's drive. There are vault toilets, though, and a dumpster for trash. Location wise, Horse thief has great access to Canyonlands and Dead Horse. We didn't see a ranger the entire time we were here. We camped at Horse Thief Campground - BLM in a Travel Trailer.
