Another great campground. It was a long drive into the campground (at least 4 miles of rolling hills and switchbacks); so don't give up before getting there. We were not able to get a site on the lake. But it appeared you could get down to the water if you are in lake-side sites. There was also a swimming area near our site. Plenty of campers had thei motor boats and fishing gear. We were in site #30 with plenty of space. My only complaint was that our site wasn't clean. There was trash in the firepit and a bag of trash left behind the small breaker-wall (I think it was to blocked the firelight from others. It was only about 2 feet high.) There was also small pits like bottle tops etc on the ground. Would I come again? YES, especially if I could get a site on the lake. We camped at Goose Point Campground COE in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

This review is for the upper campground of Goose Point and NOT the lake side which is beautiful and a completely different category as far as sites go. We have a 26' trailer and found it very scary and difficult to maneuver on the extremely tight and curved road. Our site had two huge drop offs on each side and a sharp hill across so backing in ( which we are pretty good at) was almost impossible. When I called for reservations, I did give our trailer size to the reservation desk (handled by camp hosts) and discussed size of site. Truly, the navigating inside this campground, close proximity to sites (you'll feel like you and 25 other campers are all sharing a back yard) is for 20' and under RV or tents. Parking our tow vehicle also got interesting because of the small entry to the site. You are allowed two vehicles per site. But we could not park our second vehicle on our site and had to borrow space from another site thank goodness for kind campers). There are two stalls in each bathroom and that is woefully inadequate. There are no full hookups ad the dump station is extremely difficult to maneuver. There is a bathhouse very far down a steep hill outside of this campground. We brought a shower tent and solar shower with biodegrade soap. "Camp Hosts" rudely made us take it down even though by Virginia law, this is allowable. He stated he "didn't have enough time to police everyone to make sure the brought biodegradable soap." We found that most of the ranger activities for kids were gone and the camp hosts now run the campground. Unfortunately, they are rude and ill informed. There is a separate company in charge of cleaning bathrooms, and they did try, but the demand is far to great to keep up. If you inquire about the good sites at the lake, you will be told how impossible they are to get. I don't like the camp host system in this capacity because I can see it would be easy to reserve prime spots for friends if you're a host. We camped at Goose Point Campground COE in a Travel Trailer.

I only rated it as a 9 because we pulled in to our reserved site Sunday about 3 and the rude people next door had their vehicles in our site. When I asked them to move, they huffed and puffed as though we were disturbing them. The following day the locals had left and the park was a place of glory. Site were spacious while some were rather close together. Our goal was to camp in Fairy Stone Park, but after visiting it and this park there is no question why we are glad we chose what we did. Would definitely return, just in June on the weekend. Reservations are a must. Good WiFi from our AT&T hotspot and cell service both with AT&T & Verizon. We camped at Goose Point Campground COE in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

We did find some Fairy Stones at the Hwy 57 Pit stop a mile to the left and the State Park is 2 miles to the right. The 5 mile trek off 57 to the park seems like and eternity.

Located on a point on Philpott Lake this is a very nice campground. We were on site 30 loop C, a very nice site once you get your trailer situated. This site is a bear to get into as there is a steel gate and gate post right in the area you need to maneuver. Site 29 across the road is the same, hard to get into. I took a side marker light off my 31' trailer getting in, but other than that I had no issues with the roads. The campground seems to be inhabited by lots of locals, which I suppose if I lived nearby I'd do the same. I made my reservations in February to get a site during the week in May, you can't get in on weekends they are all booked. There is a nice beach and boat ramp with a fairly large parking lot. To those of you with small children, some of the sites in loop C are not kid friendly as they have 15 to 20 sheer drops to the lake and this lake is extremely deep, even close to shore.
The restrooms were exceptionally clean. There are only 2 showers in each restroom. The dumpster is 1/2 mile up the hill, as is the dump station. There is another restroom at that location with more showers. We camped at Goose Point Campground COE in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

This place is very remote so bring everything you need as it is quite a haul to any shopping. We have Verizon and had fine reception. You can get some local over the air TV channels. Quite a bit of boat traffic, so if your a kayaker (I am) or canoeist be aware. The lake has extremely steep drop offs from the shore.

We had to reserve our sites 6 months in advance. We camp at this up to eight weekends each summer. Park ranger are friendly and the site are large in size. One of the best lakes in the area for boating. We camped at Goose Point Campground COE in a Fifth Wheel.

We stayed at Goose Point for 4 nights. The views on the waterfront sites in Loop C are wonderful. Most sites in Loop C are fairly level and a hard packed sandy gravel. The roads getting in are treacherous and the park itself has tight turns and narrow roads (with curbs). If this type of thing concerns you, or if you have a very large trailer or motorhome then you should consider this. It was doable, but nerve racking with our 31' travel trailer. If you do have a larger RV then I recommend site 18 as I think it is the longest site they have. There are no sewer connections and no way to turn around and head back towards the camp sites at the dump station, so plan accordingly. If you have anything larger than a pop up camper I would recommend Loop C only. Oh, there is also very little nearby in the way of food so you may want to bring plenty with you. Did I mention the views are awesome... We may go back some day, but the steep grades and narrow roads keeps this one off our frequent visit list. ** Loop C Only ** for trailers and motorhomes ! Warning ! - 10-14% grades for 5 miles and within campground - MUST have good brakes - 20mph speed limit a Must for entire road ! That being said - this is a Beautiful place ! ! CoE does Excellent job as usual in design and build (except for the hills). Once you get here it would not be for an overnight stay - out of the way and difficult. Reservations Required as locals fill it on weekends and careful choosing your site. But What a View ! Great park with wonderful views of the lake from almost any campsite. We stayed in the "C" loop and had no problem maneuvering or leveling our 35' motorhome. We initially selected a site in another loop with an online reservation but upon discovery it was too tight for our vehicle so we moved. In my opinion, only Loop "C" is designed for motorhomes or larger 5th wheels. The scenery was wonderful, and the beach setup was great for families with kids. Restrooms were older but pretty well maintained. Good electric and water and excellent hosts. Very limited over-the-air TV reception and very limited AT&T service. We would definitely stay here again. We camped at Goose Point Campground COE in a Motorhome.

As others mentioned, the road coming into this park was hilly and curvy, but not the worse that I've been on. The truck and trailer handled it fine. We arrived at the park a little after 9pm and were unaware that they closed the gates at 10pm. If we had been later we would not have been able to get in. This being said, we had friends who were an hour behind us and the park host was very accommodating and gave us a number for them to call when they were on 822, so that he could be here to let them in and register them. We were in campground A site 49, and our friends were in site 47. Both sites were easy back-ins and were very level; they had a type of ashy dirt on the ground that was somewhat messy when it rained. Our site was on top of a steep hill with a drop off behind our site that dropped down to the lake. There was a bathroom in campground A with flush toilets and sinks, but no showers. The shower house was down the hill between campground A and B. There were 4 flush toilets in there and 4 showers. The one night I used the shower, I was in the last stall and had very little to no water pressure. Daughter was in another stall and I could hear the water beating on her. On the TV antenna we received a fair amount of over the air channels. The different employees of the park system we met were all very nice. Did notice the sheriff for Patrick County driving through many times. The dump station was another slight issue. To get to it, you had to do a very wide swing out of campground A. There were dump areas on either side but it would only accommodate one trailer at a time. It was on a slope, so was hard to completely drain your downhill tank. We were lucky that we were the only ones here to dump at the time, but could see there being a problem if there were more than one waiting. You could easily have people from the campground below and above waiting to dump. We camped at Goose Point Campground COE in a Travel Trailer.

Park is located on Philpott lake with good boating access but limited number of sites at near lake level for those that like to access boat from site. Lake is popular for fishing - I saw school of fish swimming near shore line right below my campsite. Roads are winding and can be steep but they are passable. Big rigs just need to take it slow and I did see some large rigs while there. This is a popular location for locals - most of the neighbors lived within 25 miles of the lake and they visit often. They said it's almost impossible to get a reservation on the weekend and the site markers showed most sites reserved for the upcoming weekend. The bathrooms were passable but the campground was quiet during the week so hopefully they will clean more frequently when the campground is full. We have camped here many times over the years. The park is nicely situated on Philpott Lake with wonderful views, boat ramp, swimming area and lake front sites. Big Rigs need to plan ahead as only a limited number of sites can accommodate anything over 35 feet. It's important to note that many sites would accommodate them, but there is no way to back into most of them as the campground roads are very very narrow. I'm at 55ft total length and struggle to drive through the campground. To us this is not that big of a problem given the beauty of the park. We camped at Goose Point Campground COE in a Fifth Wheel.

What a great campground. As with the other posts, the road in is narrow and curvy, but its worth it when you get here. We stayed in Loop C, which is on the water. They have three campgrounds, A, B, and C loops. Loop C is more suited for larger units and the sites are great. The swimming beach is at loop C and also a boat ramp and a fishing dock. The bathhouses were clean and well stocked. The grounds were spotless. Rangers stop by your campsite and welcome you here. This was our first time here, and we will surely be back. Please be advised that this park is not, I repeat, not big rig friendly. Anything over 30' is a struggle. We made the mistake of not reading the reviews before going into this park. Once we were there we tried to make it work. We are 45' and this park was not for us. There are lots of sharp turns and dips. The park was built several years ago and is made for the smaller rigs. The sites are uneven: we were not able to level the entire time we were there and, in so doing, we ended up cracking both of our windshields. This park is very nice, clean and the workers were very accommodating. The County Road 822 going into the park is 5 miles long and it is a rollercoaster ride. Just be informed. This campground is not made for larger motorhomes. The interior roads are very narrow with wooden post positioned along the roads. Our site was #11 which was waterfront and very peaceful and beautiful but getting into it was difficult with our 40 ft motorhome. Leaving the site was difficult due to a sharp narrow ascending curve going towards sites 17 & 18. If you do have a larger motorhome or fifth wheel, only book in Loop C which has the bigger sites. Other loops are fit more for tents, pop-ups, or small trailers. Please research this campground extensively if you are considering it and have a large motorhome or fifth wheel and be prepared to use much caution when driving and parking in your site. Most state parks or COE's where made so long ago, they are more suitable for smaller RV's. Too bad they don't consider revamping them to accommodate the current RV's. Yikes! We were placed in the "A" Loop at the top of this campground. Site 46 was a nightmare. We had to pull hard and fast up into the campsite, and we like to have never been able to back in to hitch back up. This was due to the steep slope and loose gravel. Pros: Pretty. Sites generally level. Water and electric reliable. AT&T cell phone coverage available. Cons: Loop driveways really, really tight. A big rig could not do this campground. There are no showers in A or B loops, so you must drive downhill and hope for adequate parking. Speeding on the main road was a problem. Lots of visits by the Patrick County Sheriff's office. Hmmm. The dump station had two ports, but only one camper could enter at a time, defeating the purpose of dual lanes. Be sure to bring your supplies... it is a long way to the nearest store! I would say this is a very popular site for locals to camp at. For out-of-town visitors, there is little to do except fishing and boating. We would not return due to our lousy site and boring nature of the area. We camped at Goose Point Campground COE in a Travel Trailer.
