30 minutes from Richmond 10 minutes from Food Lion shopping center. 50 amp electric and water. Dump station. All large level sites. Every site can fit 45ft. coach. Firewood is $5 per bundle. Loyalty system. Cash box or pay by phone. Checkout 1PM. T-Mobile service good. Fall foliage excellent in November. Water spigots at every campsite are on even during freezing nights. We camped at Pocahontas State Park in a Motorhome.

We LOVE Pocahontas State Park! Lucky to have it fairly close to home. The sites are large, there are plenty of trails to hike and bike on, and the park rangers are very friendly and knowledgeable. The water park is fun, the fishing is entertaining, and the water is easy to explore in a kayak, canoe, or small boat. Lots of play areas for kids and very family friendly atmosphere. Pocahontas sets a high standard that’s hard for other parks to live up to! We camped at Pocahontas State Park in a Travel Trailer.

This is our first visit to Virginia state parks and we were very surprised how nice the park is. Check is was easy except you must complete a one page form even though you have a reservation. Take the form to the gift shop and you receive your paper work for your site. We were in site 02 which was not level. Sites from 01 to 64 are the old park which most are not level and are full shade. Next time we return we will try to camp in the new section, sites 65 to 125 which most appear level and have partial shade. T-mobile was about two bars so reception okay. The park also has a good selection of walk up sites so there is a good chance to pick up a site on the weekend. The laundry has all new machines, washers are $1.00 a load. They are clean with a good size folding table. We camped for five days. We camped at Pocahontas State Park in a Motorhome.

We've stayed at Pocahontas SP many times -- some tent camping and some with our camper. This was our first time here in about three years, and we were reminded how much we really like this park! The layout is a little unusual in that there really isn't a true "loop" like other state parks, but that seems to work in your advantage. We had a site-specific pull-through reservation, but noticed that many of the non-site specific sites were very nice. Despite being completely full for the weekend, the campground area was relatively quiet. We camped at Pocahontas State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Second time we've stayed here in the fall. Beautiful park with large pull-thru and back-in sites. Most are pretty private and spaced well. Good water pressure and electric. We love this park and recommend it to any size rig and to families. Didn't get to the lake(s) or swimming pool complex as they were closed for the season. Everything is clean and the camphosts are frequently out on the roads. If you're a hiker or mountain biker this place is a must! We camped at Pocahontas State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

A lot of hiking and biking trails from easy to difficult. Nice pool area along with visitor center and museum. Canoe and other water sport equipment is available for rent or bring your own. Stores and resturants are approx 15 minutes away. The road coming from town into the park is narrow and the locals drive it fast. So be careful. Enjoy. #themorgansonthemove

Overall Rating:

Lovely state park with just over 100 water/electric (no sewer) rv sites, cabins and yurts in two camping loops. Sites are a mix of back in and pull throughs (all very spacious), with roughly half reservable online and the remainder first come first served. Most sites are gravel over dirt/sand, the kind that gets tracked all over your rig. Pull through sites 66 through 77 were paved and appeared to be level. The pull through sites 1 through 13 were gravel/dirt and were not very level. Many trees all around, but most sites get full sun. Interior roads were paved and in excellent condition. We stayed in site 82, a back-in site that had a slight front to back slope but was easily corrected with our jacks. Unfortunately, we had power issues at our site due to voltage being too high. This caused our surge protector to trip several times a day, every single day we were there. Maintenance came out right away and replaced the breaker and 50 amp plug, but to no avail. The last day, we ran off the 30 amp plug (which seemed to work fine) and then our generator when it got too hot to run off of 1 a/c unit. Park was full so we could not be moved to another site. Water pressure was fine and Verizon signal was good. No cable but we were able to pull in about 20 OTA channels. Bathrooms had 4 toilets per gender and 4 private unisex showers, but bathhouse had no a/c and it was VERY hot. Laundry onsite as well as a nice playground. Very small camp store that sold gifts, snacks, ice and ice cream. Friendly and helpful staff. Large waterpark complex on the park grounds, but open to the public and they come in by the busload. Too many people so we didn't even make an attempt to get into the pool. Dump station easily accessed coming in and out of the park. Overall, the power issues made our stay unpleasant, which is a shame since this is a really nice park. We camped at Pocahontas State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

The road in is very, very narrow. Drive-able but be careful, the on-coming cars are driving like maniacs. The site we had was spacious and more or less level. There is a lot of shade from the tall trees and a lot of manicured lawn. No code to the bathrooms. They are clean and nice with a skylight that is framed in knotty pine. No sewers on the sites which is a drawback. No wifi and no cable. We camped at Pocahontas State Park in a Motorhome.

We were here for just an overnight as it was fully booked for the weekend as there was a 48 hour running race going on. There are many trails for hiking and biking and it would be a good destination. A little to far removed from I-95 or I-64 for an overnight unless you are going between the two. The sites in the rear portion of the campground were paved. The front part (lower numbers) were gravel. A first class state park. They should all be this nice. We camped at Pocahontas State Park in a Travel Trailer.

There are two ways to secure a campsite. Reserve a "Site Specific" site on line, or just show up and drive around until you see one you like. Either way, most sites are large and private with good water and electric service. Cable TV and WI-Fi are not available. Verizon cell signal strength was good. We reserved site #71, which was level, very large and quite private. There was virtually no noise at night and we enjoyed the peace and quiet. There are many hiking and biking trails throughout the park, with a good selection of easy, moderate or difficult trails, including mountain bike and equestrian trails. Paddle boats, canoes and other non-power watercraft can be rented. Staff members were pleasant and helpful and check-in was easy and quick. We have designated this park as a favorite and we plan to return in the future when we can stay longer. We camped at Pocahontas State Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

Rating based on comparisons with other state parks we have used. A great state park! Huge, private sites. Large enough for any rig. Wooded with w/e, some 50 amp, and extra areas for large tent as well as RV. Mostly paved in back area, but some less than level. Front section mostly gravel. Bathhouses are individual rooms, an added plus. Dump station situated for use both going in or leaving the campground. Very easy hookups. Verizon worked perfectly. Outstanding personnel, from rangers at sign in to those who work around the park. Firewood easily available (at fair price) on the honor system. Campground itself is HUGE - many well marked trails, equestrian area too. Quiet and out of the way, but close enough for shopping, restaurants. Good location between Richmond and Petersburg. So much to do in the area =- history everywhere! Highly recommend. We camped at Pocahontas State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Check out the CCC museum in the CG. Interesting. When in Richmond, don't miss the Tegeder Iron Works - next to another 'must see', the Civil War Museum (does a great job explaining the causes and impact of the war from all perspectives). We took the trolley tour - not cheap, but felt it was well worth the expense. Outstanding Guide. Saw much of Richmond, not just Civil War sites. It's definitely a walking city!

We stayed here two nights with water and electric hook ups. We never ventured into Richmond. Such a beautiful park, secluded and a lot to do. We visited the CCC museum at the park, attended a free outdoor concert in the amphitheater (got lucky they had one the night we arrived) and used the free passes to the pool. The pool is also used by locals and since it was so hot, the pool was crowded. Would defiantly stay here again. We camped at Pocahontas State Park in a Travel Trailer.

It an easy access on/off highway. It has a beach which if you camp here they give you a free pass to the beach. It's a very clean state park and a lot of room between sites. The only downsize is that there is no cable or WiFi. Otherwise, this campground is awesome and would definitely return if in the area. We camped at Pocahontas State Park in a Fifth Wheel.
