We stayed at Whispering Pines Site 06 which was long enough for my 39' fifth wheel plus my truck plus two other vehicles. Lots of space between sites, well maintained CG, very clean. Grass was mowed while we were there. Level gravel sites with plenty of room on site included picnic table and fire pit. We have AT&T and was able to get 1 bar which was enough to stream Pandora. We don't have TV antennas so don't know about that, but there were no trees around our site that would block signal. Fire wood is available for $6.00 per bundle. Two dump stations available. Plan to return here often as this CG is only 20 miles from our home. We camped at Douthat State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Wonder state park with a lake which includes beach, boat, canoe, kayak, and paddle boat rentals. Lots of hiking trails also. A restaurant and small store also within the state park. Park Rangers made frequent rounds through the CG. Small town of Clifton Forge is about 5 miles away which has restaurants, Kroger, hardware store, etc.

We were met by the camp host as we were unhooking our towed and he was very friendly and helpful. Our site in the Whispering Pines campground was level and roomy with good water and electric. Dump stations are clean and convenient. We have camped here many times and are always pleased. We camped at Douthat State Park in a Motorhome.

The town of Clifton Forge is not far away and has a wonderful place for lunch called the Club Car. There is a quilt shop for the ladies and a large hardware store for the men.

The park is beautiful and our site (#23 in White Oak) was one of the best we've ever had. We had tons of room and our site looked over a creek that babbled below us. Our neighbors were all very respectful and quiet, and the camp host was helpful.

One issue that kept me from rating the park higher was that the customer service was not the greatest. We experienced several park employees who seemed less than thrilled to be doing their job. We've never had that issue in a Virginia State Park, and it really surprised us. Also, the waterfront didn't seem to be run very well. They couldn't open the deeper area of the lake with the diving platform until 3pm, and it was Saturday in July.

One thing you should know is that there is ZERO cell service anywhere in the White Oak campground. If you or your kids need to stay connected, this may create a problem. Overall, we did enjoy our stay, but we can't rank it as our favorite in Virginia. We camped at Douthat State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

We had no difficulty finding a space in White Oak campground. There were only a handful of other campers there but nearby Whispering Pines was nearly full. The sites are all really long with a crushed rock base. The roads to get to the sites could be kind of cramped with a really large rig but we had no problem. There's a scary little cement bridge to go over to get to the campground. We chose a site that backed to the stream so we heard running water when we had the windows open. All sites have a fire ring, picnic table, water and electric. There's a dump station by the well-kept (and newer looking) restrooms. When we emptied, there was a hose with sprayer to clean the system. Bundled firewood is available; pay through honor system. We took advantage of the many hiking trails. The map for the trails isn't the best but is readable. The trails are really well marked. There are a lot of things to do that we didn't take advantage of such as canoe rentals, fishing, a restaurant. We camped at Douthat State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

Stayed at Beaver Dam Equestrian campground about a mile past the campground store. All sites there are 30amp W/E. Most were pretty level and fairly spacious. Very nice and quiet, especially since there is no chance to get any OTA TV channels or Verizon signal for phone/computer. Camp store and office have wifi access, at least. The lake is close to half a mile away (either by walking to Lakeside camp loop, which has no hookups but is the only camp loop right on the lake, or by walking to the boat ramp). You have to walk on the road, which doesn't have much of a shoulder in spots. Like other VA state parks, the downside is the price. Add in the transaction fee (even for walk-ins), non-residency fee, and taxes, and you are paying around $40 for E/W. We camped at Douthat State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Douthat is famous for about 40 miles or so of hiking trails. I believe bikes are allowed on a lot of them. Beaver Dam equestrian campground is a very nice feature for horse-campers. Whispering Pines is probably your best bet if you have a larger rig and want 50amp electric. It is several miles away from the main park, though.

We had a beautiful roomy lot, that was a back-in with plenty of room to maneuver. We had water and electric only. The lots were all level. The only real draw back was the fact you had a long drive past the campground to register. I thought the price was a bit high. We camped at Douthat State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Douthat has an amazing lake with a very nice large beach area, swimming, including two lifeguards, a floating diving platform, fishing, kayaking, paddleboat and row boats for rent or you can bring your own. Lots of hiking, horse trails and a very good restaurant open Wed-Sun. The area is beautiful and lots of exploring all the way into WV and the mountains and small towns there. Will definitely plan a trip back. Only reason it gets a 9 instead of a 10 is that the camp site power (like most state parks) fluctuated from 115 to 125 and the breaker would get hot and trip at least once a day. We camped at Douthat State Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

This is a small Virginia state park close to I-64. The interior roads were OK but I only have a 27' travel trailer. We stayed at the White Oak campground for 2 nights. Most of he sites were small and several were very uneven. We were unable to level our travel trailer at our first choice (site #29) and had to pull out and try a second one (site #26). We had no bars with US Cellular and only 1 OTA TV channel. The dump station had a wand for flushing totes but no water hose connection to flush our tanks. The camp host did not seem to understand me when I asked about a hose connection to flush my tanks. We tried to hike one of the "easy" trails which was mislabeled and clearly not easy. The bath facilities were very nice and clean. Overall, this was not the best Virginia state park we have stayed at and not really worth the $30/night. We camped at Douthat State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Arrived without reservation...got one of last 3 spots...a drive thru in Beaver Dam Campground. This campground has horse stall facilities for people bringing their own horses. Had easy hook ups with dump station at end of campground. Very clean facilities with very friendly staff. Night time was very quiet with the exception of a horse that wanted everyone to know he was there. Pretty neat, though! Only complaint...camp store did not have any newspapers to enjoy on a Sunday morning! Lots of little kids were having a great time on scooters...and you could still swim...but no lifeguards. Will return. We camped at Douthat State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Stayed for 4 nights in the White Oak Campground sites 7 and 8. You can't reserve a specific site but select whatever is available when you arrive. We arrived early in the day so we had 12 different sites to pick from. We were with another family so we found two level sites next to each other and a short walk to the bathhouse. Sites were gravel with nice fire pit. Site relatively level only had to use one leveling block on trailer. Sites have water and electric but now sewer so we showered in the bathhouse. Showers were clean and setup as individual shower units. 5 shower units each with own door. We enjoyed hiking, biking, kayaking and some fishing. We were able to get limited internet connection from our site by connecting to guest connection from the park office. No cell phone coverage in the area. Roads are somewhat narrow in the park but we navigated them okay with our Ford F150 towing a 30 foot TT. Would not recommend the White Oak Campground for Big Rigs. We camped at Douthat State Park in a Travel Trailer.

We stayed in Whispering Pines campground. The sites are gravel bordered by wood, and all back-in. The park was immaculate and the campground host was friendly and helpful. All of the staff members we encountered at registration and at the lake were friendly and helpful. We had fun kayaking at the lake and enjoyed our stay. We have already made our reservation for our next stay. We camped at Douthat State Park in a Motorhome.

We stayed in Whispering Pines, campground D. This is a new loop with large level, gravel back in sites (at an angle) and a new very nice very clean bathhouse. Sites are water and electric along Wilson Creek. There is no over the air TV. We had Verizon cell. This campground is about 3 miles from the interstate, and another 3 or 4 miles to the park office. The park itself has a beautiful lake and great walking trails. With a reservation you don't have to drive all the way to the office. Although expensive for one night (because of the $5 reservation fee, even for walk in), it is a nice place to stop. Our rate was with the reservation fee, not paying for any pets ($5 each/night), and with a VA State Park pass 10% discount. This campground used to be a private park, which was purchased by the state, leveled and made into very nice sites. We would stay here again. You most likely would need a reservation on the weekend. We camped at Douthat State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Nice area. There was a lot of trail closure due to a severe storm that went through earlier in the month. Sites are nicely spaced but far from level. Some are better than other. No cell coverage no wifi. Bathrooms are dated and ok. They are cleaned but are just old. Park personnel are very helpful. Lake is nice swimming area is nice. The bridge into one of the loops is a little narrow and as no guardrails so it has a high creepy factor but there's enough room. We camped at Douthat State Park in a Tent Trailer.
