Good value for the money, but very basic. NO utilities at sites. Bathrooms very clean with flush toilets and sinks but do not have electricity. Only one shower facility at entire campground - is at camp store (well stocked) at entrance. Showers and laundry coin operated. There are water fountains and wash/utility sinks at all bathroom buildings. Some sites reservable in advance, but pay close attention - if they warn you the driveway is steep they mean it! Like a 30 degree slope! If you are just parking your car no big deal as grassy tent sites are level. But if you are in an RV would be a problem. G Loop is the worst for steep driveways. (Definitely avoid G201, G196, G194, G191). G193 has ugly water tank immediately adjacent to your site. Other loops more level overall. I was there on a Sunday in June and it was empty - no reservations required. Park staff said Friday and Saturday nights can get pretty full. Site A59 is the only one with a bit of a view (walk-in only). Park staff very friendly and helpful. If you are OK with "roughing it" this is a nice campground and would go again. Lots of hiking in the area, but not much else. Keep in mind no gas stations on Skyline Drive. Also don't forget $30 fee to enter National Park (not included with campsite reservation). Can access part of Appalachian Trail from campground. We camped at Loft Mountain Campground (NPS Campground) in a Tent Trailer.

Let me first say this used to be one of my favorite campgrounds. Alas, not anymore. It seems to me that there has been a concerted effort to discourage RV and towable campers in the past several years. It seems to have started when they rearranged the site a few years ago. Prior to that of the over 200 generator permitted sites you could reserve 36 of them online. You could also reserve 9 of the 26 sites in the generator free zone. Currently the generator free sites have been increased to 36 and you can reserve 100% of them online while the generator permitted sites that can be reserved have been reduced to 11 (and half of them are an undesirable left side parking, putting your coach door facing the road). In view of the facts above and: 1. Generator use is generally more prevalent among RV and towable campers. 2. The configuration of many of the sites just doesn't work well for larger RVs creating a desire to be able to reserve specific campsites. Is why I believe the park is attempting to discourage RV campers away from this campground. This weekend was the final straw. In the past few years have been able to work around the handicaps the administration has put into place by going up to the campground prior to Friday and calling the campground office prior to leaving home to ensure that they had sites that could accommodate a trailer. It seems they have put an end to that as well. When I called this week to verify if they had any sites to handle a RV I was told they would not tell me that on the phone and I would just have to drive up to the ranger station and see what was available. Every time in prior years I got at least and answer to my question and many times a quick list of the open sites. 1.5 hours to Loft, 1 hours to Big Meadow, 1.5 hours home and god know how much wasted fuel, and it all could have been avoided with a simple answer to my question. We camped at Loft Mountain Campground (NPS Campground) in a Travel Trailer.

"This is a National Park Campground." That means a lot to travelers who use the parks. The price is great for seniors, but the amenities are not at the same level as commercial campgrounds. We had a reservation for one site, but upon viewing it, we determined it was small, unlevel and the picnic table was moldy, broken, and placed away from the campsite. There are many first-come/first-serve spots available, so we went on the hunt. We found one we liked, but just couldn't fit and get level. So, we moved to another less desirable, but level site that we could fit into. It was a long pull-through (E155). We returned to the registration building and told the of our desired change. They were very friendly and amenable to our request. This campground has a variety of sites for many users (tents, large units, and small units). The sites are pretty cramped and it felt like we were sharing our site with the tenters in the next site. Rained during our stay and turned the grassy area to mud. Not really a problem, just a fact. We stayed more on the paved drive through area. Bathroom was small for the number of campers, therefore, at the end of the cleaning period the guests had pretty much trashed it. For the men only one stall and one trough; not enough to service the morning tent camper heavy crowd. Campground needs more bathrooms--general observation for almost all NPS campgrounds. Showers were available at the campstore for $1.75 for about 5 minutes. They were dirty and only 2 of 4 on the men's side worked. Wife was not impressed with her side either. Had to wait for a shower to open. There are not electric or water hookups. This is pretty much boondocking. The hiking from here is awesome. We think that you don't really camp here for the site as you come here for the hiking and beautiful Skyline Drive. We would stay here again because there really isn't another alternative. We camped at Loft Mountain Campground (NPS Campground) in a Travel Trailer.

National Park Campground made for smaller RVs. We had a 31' 5th wheel and didn't have any problems finding a good spot. We arrived on Sunday afternoon after everyone else headed home. The great thing about NP campsites is that you are located in the park and don't have to waste time driving to hiking trailheads. We surprisingly got 75 OTA channels so had choices of all of the major networks. The cell service (Sprint) was almost non existent. Generator hours didn't start till 8:00 AM. After October 15th, the hours were 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM instead of 7:00 PM We camped at Loft Mountain Campground (NPS Campground) in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Great hikes can be completed starting from your campsite. Watch out for ticks as our dog had many after our hikes. Please remember that the maximum speed on the Skyline Drive is 35 MPH, therefore staying in the park is much more desirable.

Only two of seven loops are reservable, most are first-come, first-served. At 3PM on Friday, there were a lot of people coming in for the weekend. On Saturday, a few sites were still available, but this was after labor day and before the fall crowds. Sites have short looped driveways, smallish for larger RVs. I don't think any site except for the host sites have electric or water. Bathrooms are well distributed, but showers are only located at the camp store building outside the campground entrance. Showers are coin (quarters) operated. $1.75 for "5.25 minutes". (I guess that sounds better than 5 min and 15 seconds). The next campground up Skyline Drive is Lewis Mtn where showers are only $1 for 5 min. We camped at Loft Mountain Campground (NPS Campground) in a Tent.

No power or electricity on sites. Disappointed in the "pay" showers. They had 3 pay showers of which only 1 was working. The other two were in disrepair. The cost was $1.75 for a little over 5 minutes. I was camping in a hammock riding a motorcycle. Campground has added a bear box since my last stay approx 2 years ago for those that are unable to secure their food which is an added benefit. Office was closed when I arrived and closed when I left although after hours instructions were very good. We camped at Loft Mountain Campground (NPS Campground) in a Tent.

Typical National Park campground, lots of nature, very quiet, spacious sites with fire rings and picnic tables. Most sites are not level, and very few are long enough for larger rigs. Campground roads are narrow, which makes backing in difficult, even if the site is long enough. No cell coverage. We camped at Loft Mountain Campground (NPS Campground) in a Fifth Wheel.

Great campground. I always see black bears at Loft Mountain. The NPS staff can be hateful and rude at times. Camp store is awesome. Weekends are full of folks from Northern VA who evidently have no concept of controlling their children. We camped at Loft Mountain Campground (NPS Campground) in a Travel Trailer.

Another wonderful campground in a beautiful national park! Much has been written already about this campground, so my comments will focus on our particular campsite, which was E118. This campsite was the only reservable big-rig capable site available when I made our reservations. We discovered why when we got there (I wish I had read more of the reviews, as the issues with this site are covered by at least one other reviewer). To cut to the chase, there isn't a level spot anywhere on this site. It's not just a little out of level, but a lot! I used every 2X10, every Lynx leveler, and every inch of travel of the hydraulic jacks we had to level up our 40ft motorhome, but I still could not get it level front to back. The bottom edge of our front bumper was at least 2.5 ft off the deck. The last step out of the motorhome was a doozy! I wish I could post a photo here because our motorhome looks like a 737 rotating for takeoff. I was able to get it level enough that it wasn't uncomfortable, and we were only going to be there two nights, so we stayed. Otherwise, I would have moved somewhere else, even if it meant leaving the campground altogether. In my opinion, E118 is not a suitable campsite for a tent or a large TT or MH, and Recreation.gov should not list this particular site as big-rig friendly . Perhaps a pop-up or a small TT would work better. Regardless, I still give the campground a very high rating because it is such a wonderful place overall. We will be back again, again, and again. We camped at Loft Mountain Campground (NPS Campground) in a Motorhome.

This is an excellent park, well-maintained and peaceful. The sites all have paved parking areas and grassy spots for tables, tents, fires, etc. The showers are a long walk or a short drive and are $1 for 5 minutes (which felt more like 3 minutes) but the cost of getting water up the mountain and dealing with waste water is expensive. The dumpsters were emptied regularly, and the hosts were friendly and knowledgeable. We were there over Columbus Day weekend and the weather was perfect; the campground was full both Friday and Saturday nights, so book early for busy weekends. The only point lost is for our particular site (E118); it was spacious but the most unlevel site we have ever dealt with. It sloped both side-to-side and downward; we did not have enough leveling blocks to make it level and we carry PLENTY of blocks. It was just a function of the location of our site; other sites looked fine. Overall a great campground; we will go back. We camped at Loft Mountain Campground (NPS Campground) in a Travel Trailer.

We enjoyed this park for just a one night stay while passing through on our way home. The park is nice and well kept but is very busy. The sites feel isolated, but the crowd noise reminds you that it is not. I caution people on the "pull thru" sites. We had problems in a site in the B loop getting in (and out) in our 24' motor home. I would call ahead if you are in a big rig and reserve a spot that way. We ended up in E94- Nice spot and close to a bath house for restroom facilities. Generator hours are limited, so keep that in mind if you have a medical need that would require longer use. Over all it is a nice park and we would stay here again. We camped at Loft Mountain Campground (NPS Campground) in a Motorhome.

The pull throughs are paved and are adequate for a 30' TT and tow vehicle. It was very easy to level both side to side and front to back. It was hot when we arrived but there was a nice breeze all night with cool temps. It was buggy sitting outside so take the insect repellent. The only place for potable water is at the dump station. This is a great park for dry camping, big rig friendly a lot of pull throughs and spaced out for privacy. The only drawback might be the showers are a drive if you need them, other than that we will be back. We camped at Loft Mountain Campground (NPS Campground) in a Motorhome.
