A gem of a state park. There are three campgrounds at Hungry Mother. Creekside is the original RV campground. A second one, Burson, was built to help with the large number of campers. Burson is located at the beginning of the park. The lake is close by but not visible. A third one, Oak something, is for tent campers only. Creekside has sites that are literally beside the creek. We stayed in 12. Our grandsons could run down the camper steps and be in the creek in five paces. It was beautiful and shady. In fact, our towels never dried out because there was so much shade! The downside of the location was that many of the children in the campground traipsed through our campsite to access the creek. Including an entire troop of boy scouts! Creekside is small and tight. We unhooked our tow vehicle to make it easier to park our 30 foot motorhome, but it was still tight. And we parked the Jeep between a tree and a large rock with six inches to spare on each side. Hungry Mother has a beautiful mountain lake. They rent kayaks, canoes, and paddle boats. There is a beach with lifeguards. They have lots of nice trails. There is a restaurant open Wed - Sun. We had a lovely time and would go back in a heartbeat! We camped at Hungry Mother State Park in a Motorhome.

Drive down to Damascus and do the White Top Station to Damascus bike ride. 17 miles of coasting in the shade alongside the Holston river. Fantastic!

We were in the Camp Burson area, which was excellent. Made a "non-site specific" reservation, which meant we had the pick of about 6 or 7 sites when we arrived. Ended up in a nice pull through, had some shade and plenty of space. This park is a good one, plenty to do on site and in the general area. We camped at Hungry Mother State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Holston Hills Golf Course is awesome. Plan on going to the Virginia Creeper Trail for an easy bike ride (they have rentals available in Damascus); a shuttle takes you to White Top Mountain and it's a 17 mile downhill ride, very very nice. Mount Rogers Rec Area nearby. Several grocery stores within about 3 miles of the park. Definitely a great place to visit.

We had a reservation at the Burson campground, about a mile from the park entrance. When we arrived we were given the available campsites from which we could choose. We drove through and chose site #4, some shade and relatively easy to back in with our 30 motorhome . W-S-E all worked well. Campers were friendly and laundry was clean. Ate lunch at the Hungry Mother Park Restaurant - just average and very slow service (maybe because middle of the week and a gloomy/rainy day?) Staff was friendly, trail from campground to the park was an easy bike ride. Would definitely come back. We camped at Hungry Mother State Park in a Motorhome.

We stayed at the Burson Campground, which is outside the park. Nice, level, pull-through shady site with full hookups. Nice to have 50 amp and sewer at a state park campground. The sites were long enough for our 36 foot fifth wheel and truck. Friendly campers and camp host. We went into the park to register after setting up. There is a beautiful lake with a nice swimming area and lovely scenery. The downside was that there was no wifi or internet and few TV channels. I haven't watched Gunsmoke in ages, haha. We could only use our cell phone (ATT provider) when we left the campground. We camped at Hungry Mother State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Burson Campground. Very nice park well maintained. Easy to get into. Located before the actual Hungry Mother Park. Lots of trees. Some traffic can be seen and heard. We would definitely stay here again. Exit the upper drive as there was a hole we observed several hit and have to stop to examine their rigs. This park is absolutely beautiful and serene. Quiet at this time of year. Peaceful. Need to check in at the Visitor center. The camp host noticed we had pulled into our sight and volunteered to go to the visitor center, checked us in and brought us our paperwork. He also brought us wood at $6 a bundle. We camped at Hungry Mother State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

There is a small pond to fish in within walking distance from the campground -have your license as wardens came to check. Marion is a nice town to visit. We ate at Wooden Pickles and the food and atmosphere was phenomenal. Check out the brewery across the street 27 Lions. We also saw Double feature for $7 pp at the local drive in. Beautifully maintained. Drove to Bristol (Tennessee/Virginia) Parked in VA, crossed the street and had lunch in TN. Country Music Museum A must.

We spent 4 nights at this park in the Burson section, electric and water only for 41.27 a night, (way too expensive for what you get) no discount given. Dump station is at the entrance before the park store entrance, so you will need to go back out to the road and enter there for dumping. You can pick a site online (extra $) or just take chance with non-specific sites. All the sites looked great, so save your self some $ and wait until you arrive to pick one. The map shows a water source behind us like a stream, no, just tall weeds. There are a few walking/bike trails right off the park, they were nicely placed. The laundry room had a big sink for hand washing clothes, 2 washers and dryers. Outside the bathroom is a sink for doing dishes with hot water. CONS: dogs left in RVs barking, employee was spraying around the RVs and in the lots with out any notification for pets or children the dangers. You could smell the chemical as it was a windy day. The road noise is constant as you are right on it. PROS: Saw deer, trails are close and a lake is close to walk around. Bathrooms were clean. Laundry room was wonderful with the large sink. I would not stay again as its too expensive for non residents, thought a 62+ or military discount would apply, my mistake. was told by the employee that checked us in to write it in the survey as they have had complaints about it. We camped at Hungry Mother State Park in a Motorhome.

Hungry Mother is a wonderful state park with many recreational opportunities - hiking, kayaking, paddleboarding, cycling, etc. We stayed at Burson campground, which is a mile before the main part of the park. It is a large, flat CG with a variety of hook-ups and 2 yurts. We found it very comfortable, with friendly rangers and camp hosts. The CG itself is not very interesting but the location is ideal for exploring the area. There are a couple of other CGs in Hungry Mother but we were told that Burson is better for larger RVs. The cost is discounted if you are a Virginia resident. We camped at Hungry Mother State Park in a Motorhome.

We camped at Burson which is about a mile from the swimming beach. We really liked it. Sites close but not too close. They have a restaurant at the lake which was good. We ate on the outdoor patio. Wifi wasn't too good but when we put up our wifi extender, it significantly improved. We camped at Hungry Mother State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Bring your bikes! This park is part of the Virginia Creeper Trail and the campground itself is excellent for biking for all ages. Beautiful large swimming, canoeing, kayaking lake with very large beach and restaurant and snack bar. It is a local favorite, but we didn't feel crowded. The lake also has a diving platform. Some sites are only partly shaded and can be short although most are lengthy wide enough. Other sites would have no problem handling the longest of RVs. Excellent daily planned programs and activities. Call ahead for entry into the park. It is very easy to enter the wrong way, but other than that, once you're checked in, the campground is awesome. We camped at Hungry Mother State Park in a Travel Trailer.

VA state parks are great and this is one of the best. We love this park. Great hiking trails. We stayed at the Creekside Campground. The only negative is no wifi and the sites at Creekside are muddy. When it rains, it gets messy. But the creek is delightful and the camp host and rangers are very friendly. The roads in the park are a bit tight with an exciting hairpin to maneuver. Overall Rating:

Beautiful park and very nice campground. Stayed at Camp Burson, which is more accessible for bigger RVs. Nearby hiking trails include one around the lake and another (across rt.16) that climbs a ridge. Camp Burson is just downstream from the dam. Sites are level and most are quite spacious. There are about 10 pull-through sites. Campground staff and hosts are very welcoming and helpful.

Creekside campground is up in the main part of the park, but is definitely not big-rig friendly. The road to it is narrow and contains a hair-raising hairpin curve. The biggest downside to the park is not the park's fault. It is a problem with Virginia state parks. They charge a transaction fee on top of the normal nightly fee, even for walk-ins. They charge non-residents an extra $4.00/night. And they have something called "site-specific" sites, which cost an extra $3.00 per night if you pick one (the non-site-specific sites are first-come, first-serve). That adds up to $40 or more for one night of E/W hookup (you can add another $4 for sewer). We camped at Hungry Mother State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

The park offers a variety of organized activities on weekends, including nature walks, informational talks, canoe/kayak tours, etc. The trails are for walking and/or biking and are kept in really good shape. The lakeside trail from Camp Burson to the swimming beach in the main park is a little over a mile long, but mostly level (except for by the dam's spillway). Great place to come with kids.
