Overall Rating:

If your in area of Max Meadows Virginia and need a place to stay for a few days or longer this is a CG that is right of the hwy from 77/81. Our GPS had no problems finding this CG. Good signage. Very noisy area and you can hear the trucks on the HWY 24 hrs a day. Getting in and out of the park is not for the faint of heart, very steep incline both ways. Sites are not level and require wood and jack pads on all most all sites. The park is mostly longer term residents who work in the area. We chose this CG as a jumping off point to hike the many state parks in the area. The owners work hard to keep the park clean. This is not Resort, no laundry facility, pool, or dog park. No concrete pads. The sites are gravel and grass. Needs some TLC. We requested a level site long enough for a 40ft RV. We were placed in a RV site that was only able to handle the RV and not our vehicle. When you opened the door of the coach it was a steep exit. No area to set up. We were unable to level the coach. Asked to be moved the next day. Told they were full and all they could offer us was the the over flow parking area. Got moved, site was longer but it still required wood and jack pads under the tires and jacks. The owner will not invest additional $400 a month to have a garbage picked up twice a week. Garbage was overflowing everywhere . This place is a good stopping point for a day or two. If you need to stay longer for work the price is very good per month. We will not stay again due to the noise level and the huge garbage issue. We camped at Pioneer Village Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

On Saturdays there is a great Farmers Market in Wytheville. Great hiking in the area. This is Amish country and there is a store down the road called the "Dutch Pantry". Has great bulk food and a deli for sandwiches. WallMart, Lowes and fast food is only a 10 min drive.

Overall Rating:

First Impression: Pulling in a large, heavy RV, you better have a strong tow vehicle. Road is gravel and a lot of serious up and down hills. Safety: Some wildlife but the bear died. No other concerns. Access: Exit 80 off I-81 in Virginia, north to East Lee highway, turn to the right (east), about 3 miles and watch for signs. Municipal road in good condition but somewhat narrow. Good signage, Garmin GPS is accurate. Office: Small shanty at entrance to CG for registration only. No store. Credit cards accepted. Online reservations not available. Multiple price discounts (AARP, Veterans, Military, Good Sam). Facilities: No pool, spa, fitness room or rec center. No laundry room. Nice restrooms/showers (score "A"). No propane sales. No playground. No off-leash dog run. Campground: Next to a creek but not in a flood plain. No storm shelter available. Lightly wooded. Interior roads are narrow gravel in good condition with gentle turns and no overhead obstacles. Big rigs and long coaches shouldn't have problems. No tent area, yurts, or cabins. Sites are all spacious, sufficiently level, grass/gravel, pull-through and back-in, nice grass between. Utility locations vary. Electric at middle-to-front; sewer in the middle and our water was in back. Electric 20/30/50; no meters. Adequate water pressure with good taste. Sewer pipe is 4" threaded, "tilted" between ground level to 12" high. No patios. Some sites have picnic tables. Fires in fire rings. Marginal satellite views (trees). Free cable TV (43 channels, most are "fuzzy"). No OTA TV channels. Free Wi-Fi with good coverage BUT no internet access (huh?). Verizon phone at 3 bars; 4G at 1-2 bars. No recycle bins. Noise: No railroad, aircraft, or local traffic, but interstate noise is very noticeable 24 hours. Bug Report (mid May): no insects noted. Runners: CG roads marginal for running. Yoga: plenty of room on the grass for your mat. Conclusion: Score 6-Nice. We camped at Pioneer Village Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Max Meadows, VA, is a small locale east of Wytheville, VA. The entire stretch of I-81 between exits 70 and 80 are basically one, big, truck stop. Only a few national restaurants, numerous fast food eateries. Walmart, Ruby Tuesday, O'Reilly's, Advance Auto, banks, churches. Diesel at exit 80 $3.059.

Once you make it into the campground its great. The hard part is when you turn off the main road, you have several gravel steep hills to maneuver. There are a few restaurants at the interstate exit. Some nice walking by the creek below campground. We will for sure stay here again when passing thru We camped at Pioneer Village Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

W/E/S + cable + Wifi. Lots of permanent trailers for people actually living there, but it was a relatively nice park. Sites were not very level, but it was doable. It was OK for an overnight as it was fairly convenient to I-81. We camped at Pioneer Village Campground in a Motorhome.

Nice countrified park nestled in a valley along I-81, adjacent to a stream. Steep gravel road leading in, but not bad. Our gravel pull-thru was level & roomy with picnic table & stone campfire ring. Grassy, well kept grounds weren't muddy even after heavy rain. There is WiFi in the park but it was too weak for us to use; no cable. The park itself is low-key & quiet but you do hear road noise from I-81. There are some long-termers around the perimeter but it's not junky. We camped at Pioneer Village Campground in a Travel Trailer.

We were able to book the night as we were traveling up I-81 for $35 with senior discount. The couple who own the place led us to the site in their golf cart and were easy and nice to deal with. The park was very well maintained, grass cut, trees mulched, etc. We had a nice pull through site. We only used the 30A electrics, not the other hookups. It's a quiet, nice looking place that we'd be glad to stay at again. We camped at Pioneer Village Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Campground was located in the country but was still close to interstate. It was exceptionally well kept and the staff was friendly and accommodating. It was a beautiful location. We travel with our dogs and there was plenty of space for them. We will stay here again when we travel through this area. Very nice! We camped at Pioneer Village Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Most gorgeous campground we stayed at on way to Maine from Florida. Chose it because it was near I-81 north of I-77. Sites were beautifully designed. Spacious, paved, grass and trees between sites. The restrooms featured spacious, spotless, modern showers. Good lighting. The owners take great pride in maintenance. Enjoyed walking the trails around the campground after a long drive. I wished we could have stayed longer. We camped at Pioneer Village Campground in a Motorhome.

Town 8 miles away. Lot of room between sites. Playground for kids too. Even a gazebo for concerts, weddings, and huge, covered picnic pavilions for receptions, parties, rallies, etc.

The park is kind of isolated - on top of a big hill. But it is in a lovely setting. There were no units across from our site, so we had a nice view of trees and mountains. The park has nice landscaping. There is a lovely creek down at one end - very, very nice. The (fairly spacious) site has gravel for the RV and then grass (in pretty good shape) with a picnic table. Not many amenities and we would not recommend the bathroom - very basic, not very nice. Hey, if you're in an RV use our own! There are some permanents, many with large sites with lovely landscaping. A cute park - we would recommend it. We camped at Pioneer Village Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Go to Wytheville. It has a lovely historic downtown and a lot of historic homes. Stop by the Visitors Center - they are very helpful. The 57 mile New River Bike Trail is very nice: flat & shady with lovely views of the mountains and the New River - not paved, but very good. We started at the Foster Falls. $5 parking, lots of history. Also, Blacksburg is awesome (home of VA Tech) and the Cascade Waterfalls in the Jefferson Nat'l Forest is spectacular!

Beautiful park like setting with a lot of grass area which runs along a river. Grass and trees between sites. Clean well kept RV park. Sites are level. Good water pressure and electric. There is some highway noise and wifi is slow. Cable TV is offered. Management was very accommodating and attentive to our needs. We camped in a motorhome towing a car. We would camp here again if in this area. We camped at Pioneer Village Campground in a Motorhome.

The road in is a bit steep but we didn't have a problem with our 40 foot rig. The folks running the campground were very nice and thoughtful. Site plenty long and wide. Hook ups good. Some road noise from Interstate but fine in a hard sided rig. We camped at Pioneer Village Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Just stayed overnight. The staff were very friendly, escorted us to our site. We were about 65 ft long. Our site fit us with none to spare. We asked about leaving in the morning as we could not make the turn with a car parked across the street. She told use they would make sure the gentleman had his car moved in the morning so we could get out(it was, and we had no problems0. Very rustic campground but can well kept. Nice people. Did not use WiFi or cable although they were available. Would camp here again. We were in a caravan of three coaches and they accommodated us all. We only spent a night here passing through, it was convenient, not to far off the highway, in fact the highway borders one side of the park so there was some road noise but not to bad. The sites were nice, the bathhouse was clean. The nicest part is the beautiful stream at the bottom of the property, and some beautiful gardens. I would recommend. We got there about 5pm they met us on the way in. It was just an overnight stop. It's a great place to stay and I would do it again if I went out that way. Everything was well taken care of and clean. But because of the time we got there the town was pretty much closed there was nothing open so if we didn't have it your not going to unless the near by truck stop has it. with a dennys.
