We are in LOVE with this park. All the staff is friendly and helpful. Camp store is really nice (and has great ice cream), museum is great, the office and visitor center are clean and welcoming. Beach is very easy to get to and very clean. We saw dolphins one morning. It isn't facing due east so you can't see the sun rise, but it has great sunsets. You can ride your bikes in the campground on blacktop or a 6 mile dirt trail in the state park (beautiful). You can also take a 1 mile blacktop bike path through a residential area from the State Park to a little shopping center that has a grocery and great restaurant, along with some other stores. We enjoyed the military activity from next door, especially reveille in the morning (it's ok it's at 0800). Only issue we had was with the firewood. Our bundle was really "hard" and husband couldn't make kindling and had trouble getting it going for cooking a meal. Once it was going it lasted a really long time though. We wish we could have stayed longer than the 2 days we were there. We camped at First Landing State Park in a Motorhome.

Do NOT bring a Big Rig!!!! Narrow roads, trees scrape the top and sides of the RV, and the only sites that narrowly accommodate big rigs are VERY narrow. Rest rooms by the office were nice and clean. The shower I used needed cleaning and painting. It is WELL used. Now, if I was a tent camper, or if I drove a Class B or small Class C RV, I would give this place an 8. No sewer is a disadvantage, but the size of the place and the proximity to the beach (right on the beach) are big pluses. If they trimmed the trees along the road and in the bigger sites I would rate higher. But, as things stand, I won't be back. We camped at First Landing State Park in a Motorhome.

One of the most popular VA State Parks -- was completely full over Labor Day weekend. We were in the non-site specific loop which had only 35 spots. The spots facing the dune were partially shaded. Spots on the inside were full shade, and outside of the loop backed the main city road. Only one bathhouse in our loop, not super clean, but was well maintained. The beach and ocean (actually the bay) was a short walk, just over the dune. Camp store was well stocked. There is also a nature center and lots of hiking trails. We camped at First Landing State Park in a Tent Trailer.

Very convenient to the beach, and very nice to have the water and electric hookups. You definitely need them in the summer. Very convenient location to a supermarket and restaurants. Not too many restaurants but still good. The bathrooms can use better cleaning. We camped at First Landing State Park in a Tent Trailer.

Park is beautiful and great location. Sites are well spaced. Water at every site. On the bay and quick bus trip to the main beach or a short car drive. Only issue was the Rangers and staff of the park. Neighbors played VERY loud music all day long with a very large speaker system. So loud that we could hear it over the AC inside of our camper. Ranger said nothing he could do, staff said not there problem. Roger said I should go out and buy my own speaker system and play my own music loud! Such a shame for a great park to be staffed and policed by people that don’t care. We ended up leaving early as the music was too much and I didn’t want to play the bigger system as that isn’t right either. Use caution here, but it is a beautiful location. We camped at First Landing State Park in a Travel Trailer.

We were able to get into First Landing State Park for three weekdays with only a couple of weeks lead time which is incredible for June. This is a well run park with sites for any type of camping that you can think of with tent/car camping sites to 50 foot RV sites with 50 amp electric service. In addition to camping/RV sites they have yurts, that look fairly new, available. While there are over 180 sites wedged between Shore Drive and the Chesapeake Bay most sites are tucked into the natural foliage which provides some privacy. Our 50 foot site easily accommodated our 40 foot rig with plenty of room for our full size pickup toad and a visitor's vehicle. While most of the sites are surrounded by trees, they seem to be cut back so they don't scratch you RV, we were able to get satellite reception with no problem and there are plenty of over the air RV channels. There are several walkways that provide access to a pretty clean sandy beach on the bay. The staff were pleasant to interact with and the check-in process was quick and efficient. It looked like the local bus system stopped at the park as well as a trolley system that take people to the boardwalk. There is an extensive trail system across Shore Drive for walking and trail cycling. We would definitely stay here again. We camped at First Landing State Park in a Motorhome.

Great beach, wooded sites. Disappointed that store was closed for renovation. Sunday was peaceful but by Monday, there were military helicopters from nearby base buzzing us very closely in the evening and at night. They were also practicing with automatic weaponry. This is not where you want to be if you have experienced the trauma of a war zone. Sites were level. Some campers were overflowing their campsites causing the road to be difficult to navigate. We camped at First Landing State Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

I stayed in December, so park empty, but I suspect would be pretty full in warmer weather. Keep in mind even "beachfront" sites do not allow you to see or hear the ocean - many dunes, brush, and trees in the way. Would definitely hear some traffic noise if at a site adjacent to Shore Drive. Have to cross a boardwalk to access the beach. Once you are at the beach is very nice. About 1 mile of beach in front of state park, another 2-3 miles along private homes and hotels. Plenty of sand for playing or resting. Bath houses clean but old, must be ok with a few bugs/spiders. No heat or A/C. Interior roads kind of narrow and windy - might be a challenge with a large rig. Fairly basic park overall with few amenities - main draw is the beach. Good amount of trees and bushes between sites provide shade and privacy. We camped at First Landing State Park in a Tent Trailer.

VA Beach proper about 10 minute drive. There are restaurants, grocery, etc about 2 miles away. "Citrus" restaurant nearby offers great breakfast and lunch and has year round dog-friendly patio.

Water & electric hookups were good, but there is no sewer. Narrow interior roads are paved, reservable sites are not. Our site was somewhat soft sand and not the best for parking our rig. There were lots of sand spurs, and even with a rug, we constantly tracked sand & spurs inside. There are boardwalks over the dunes in a few spots that take you to a beautiful beach. The people in the office were super friendly & helpful. We received several OTA TV stations. You cannot see the water from your sites. I would not recommend this campground for big rigs and do recommend staying away from the boggy area in the middle of the campground. Restrooms & showers were very dated, but clean with paint peeling. This was pretty expensive for a state park & we would try somewhere else next time. We camped at First Landing State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Very busy park. Bathhouses could use some updates. Easy walk to large sandy beaches. Roads are tight but passable. Is next to military base, so you may get some aircraft noise. Shuttle bus to Virginia Beach is available. Lots of trails through cypress swamps. My site was only large enough for the RV. No room for a tent or canopy. Overall Rating:

Very secluded sites, surrounded by trees. The trolley stops ended on October 1st so you need to have transportation to get back and forth to Virginia Beach boardwalk, which is six miles away. Therefore, If you are camping in a motor home, make sure to tow a vehicle with you for transportation. Most of the sites are not long enough for a 30 foot rig and car so you will have to leave your car in the parking lot at the park entrance. Most sites are back in, which can be difficult due to narrow roads, trees, and tight spaces. No site hook ups, but there is a 2 station Dump station at entrance to campground. Campground is next to a busy Naval Reserve Training station. I heard many helicopters throughout the day and gunfire at nights, which became somewhat annoying. The beach was relatively close but no one was swimming because of the weather (I guess). There were several people fishing from the beach. At sunset the dolphins come pretty close to the shore looking for fish to eat. One night several large dolphins were about 30 feet from the shore aggressively chasing fish. I was a little nervous about getting in the water after seeing this. I rated the service low because the camp store and office closed at 4:30 during the non peak periods. If your looking for a secluded place nestled in a wooded camp ground or enjoy fishing then this is a great spot. If you want more activities and access to nightlife then you may not like this campground, especially during non peak periods. We camped at First Landing State Park in a Motorhome.

Overall I was not impressed. I have been to 4 Virginia State Park Campgrounds this year and 2 last year and this is my least favorite. We stayed in a EW50 site so i knew getting there at 5PM we would not have the pick of the litter as far as sites go. The non-site specific side of the campground is to the left upon entering. There are only 31 sites total and only 11 of those are 50 foot sites. As expected all of the better sites were taken but there was 5 of the 11 left. Most were on the southside of the loop and just a cyclone fence away from busy shore drive.we ended up in site 5 which is right next to the bathhouse. There is no vegetation between the site and the bathhouse so you picnic table is right along the walkway to the bathhouse. The only good sites I saw were site 1, 7 and 8. I took a ride through the east loop that is all site specific and they are mostly 20 foot sites for tents. There were a few RV sites but even those seemed short and all the sites were very crowded together. On the good side, all the staff I encountered were great. Very helpful and friendly. A well stocked Camp Store that had fountain drinks and snacks (nachos, hotdogs). Our site while right next to the bathhouse was also right next to the boardwalk over the dune to the beach. The beach was great. Clean and well kept. All in all I guess its what is it that you are looking for. If peace, quiet and a little privacy is what you are looking for look elsewhere. If trailer park camping is you thing then this is just right for you. We camped at First Landing State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

Large campground at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. The State Park extends far across the highway and includes miles of multi-purpose trails popular with joggers and cyclists. Some sites are small and near - almost surrounded by - swampy standing water; others are on higher ground and surrounded by mature low trees. Pick a site close to the beach to avoid the swamps if you can. The sites labelled "site specific" are those that van be specifically reserved. Others are reserved by category. Our site 143 was fairly private and a short walk to beach access boardwalk. If you have a big or tall rig, use the outermost perimeter campground roads for ingress/egress, as the interior roads have low-hanging trees. No sites have sewer but there is a dual-station sanitary dump in the front of the campground. Showers had plenty of hot water, but are basic paint-peeling concrete - about what you'd expect for a beach campground. We camped at First Landing State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

The beach fronts the Chesapeake Bay, not ocean. Safe for small children as the waves are small. Explore the rest of the park across Shore Drive. There is a fine multi-use trail that goes to the Atlantic Ocean, from which you can bike-ride to the beach boardwalk. Also some canoeing/kayaking. If you stay in the eastern-most part of the campground you will be treated to patriotic loudspeaker music every morning at 8am.

What a great campground! We were only planning on staying one night but as soon as we saw the campground, it was so nice we added another night. Our site was under a canopy of twisted, gnarled trees. Lots of trees between sites made it very secluded. Site 151 was right across from the beach. You couldn't really see the beach but there was a boardwalk to the beach. The staff and campground hosts were friendly and helpful. We camped at First Landing State Park in a Motorhome.

There are great hiking and biking trails in the park across the street from the campground. We did a 14 mile bike ride on the Cape Henry trail. It meanders through forest, past exotic lagoons, salt marshes and beautiful Lake Susan Constant. It is very close to Virginia Beach, lots of shopping and restaurants. Be sure not to miss Cape Henry lighthouse and First Landing Historic site just a few miles away. You can walk to the beach from any campsite.
