It's all about the location. Though a bit pricey for what you get, the only park if you want to be near Gig Harbor. Downtown is within walking distance, and there is also a trolley that runs frequently, $0.50 per ride or $1 for the day. Albertsons, Costco and Target are nearby and plenty of other stores within a few miles . Breweries abound as do good restaurants. A multi use trail that runs through town and across the Tacoma Narrows Bridge is within walking distance. The park is in the pines, wooded and relaxing. There are basically 2 sections, a lower section with part time campers and upper where longer term campers stay. Interior roads are paved, with sites being gravel/medium sized rocks, no grass and varying in length and width. Parking and leaving is a bit tricky, little tight on the turns. Our site was comfortably long and wide enough for our 36 foot Class A and Jeep. Electric was fine, water pressure average, and cable TV a bit on the weak side. We did not use the bathrooms or laundry. - Vegas Trippers
Jul 2019 - $40.00
The park was in an excellent location with easy walking access to the town of Gig Harbor and a short drive into Tacoma. Sites were a wee bit tight side to side for big rigs, but manageable. Staff was great, always helpful. Little bit of road noise if you're towards the front of the park, but not an issue. Laundry was newer and machines all worked. If we had any complaint, it is the rock used on the pads. The gravel is so large dogs fear to tread on it. Absolute ankle twisters. Manageable but not comfortable to traverse. - SVLandYacht
Jun 2019 - $56.00
Sites were plenty long and ours was level. Park is larger than it first appears. Several long term units in rear, upper area but not a detraction at all. Park appears well cared for. Nice helpful staff. - granitebaygeezer

Very beautiful, quiet park on the Key Peninsula. Nice hiking and views of the south Puget Sound. The group camp looks awesome, will have to return with the Boy Scout troop. The park is very narrow and winding. I could barely fit thru with my 25' TT and full size truck. Site 78 in particular was a puzzle to get out of, once I got in. It's a pull-thru site that you can't actually drive all the way through with a rig that big. The park seems to be dry-camping only, which is fine if you know that going in. Dump onsite is included in the camping fee. Hikes out to the point and along the beach are easy and fun. The place seems off the beaten path and quiet. - PNWNerd
May 2018 - $30.00
This is a none service park. It's an older park and fairly narrow to navigate. Sites were not very level. Although it is a beautiful park with very large trees and great trails. It's at the end of the Kitsap Penninsula, it's only 30 min. from Silverdale. I would stay here again. - Landsharkcampers
Sep 2015 - $35.00
Penrose Point is a beautiful state park with no hookups. Water spigots are available, and the dump station has potable water. The campground is heavily forested, which grants significant privacy for most campsites. Some of the turns are quite tight and branches can be low, so really big rigs may have a tough time navigating to their site. But, my 25' trailer and 20' truck were fine. The sites are moderately level. Bring some blocks. You will need them. Verizon service was good. Due to the many tall trees, satellite TV service is nearly impossible, and broadcast TV is limited to a few local religious channels. But don't spend your time watching TV! Get out and see the beauty of nature in the Pacific NW. There is no playground for the little ones, but a big grassy day use area is available with a smooth gravel beach which is very shallow and perfect for wading. This is an ideal park for kayaking. The hiking trails are extensive and lovely. This park is fairly remote, yet only 2 hours from downtown Seattle, 0nly 1 hour from Tacoma. A big grocery and several small restaurants are located about 20-25 minutes north of the park. The sites are gravel and dirt, with lots of moss mixed in. Campfire rings and picnic tables are at each site. Though I didn't see every campsite, I recommend avoiding site 50 - the trail to the bathrooms literally goes through the site. I camped in site 16 - a moderately sized pull-through. I was at Penrose on Labor Day weekend. My fellow campers were okay. On one side, two families were loud talkers, but generally fine. On the other side, two families that were quiet and hardly noticeable other than the occasional soft notes of strumming on guitar strings. Pretty typical for a state park on a holiday weekend. Kids on bikes were everywhere. Lots of dogs too. I would happily return to Penrose Point. - SeaTeacher

This park has a small salt water beach access area. Lots of trails with some of them providing a good workout. Bring lots of leveling blocks as most of the site are not very level. Water, electric, and sewer infrastructure is in very good shape. Verizon wireless signal level was strong enough to provide internet and phone. This is an older park right in a residential area but your really wouldn't know it. - hoppers4
May 2017 - $40.00
Older park in somewhat rundown condition. As others have said... windy narrow access is not big rig friendly. Lots of "campers" in small tents and autos. First park in 3 years we have felt strangely unsafe. No campground host presence, even though there's a 5th wheel parked in the host spot. He is never "on duty". Bathrooms/showerhouses are being worked on and maybe in the future they will be acceptable. Unlike other campgrounds we have stayed at all across the country, we did not meet any other campers while here. Everybody pretty much keeps to themselves. It is quiet. The traffic around here is terrible with windy roads and aggressive drivers. Not likely to stay here again. - raytwntrvlr
Sep 2016 - $45.00
Except for bath/shower bldg, which was cleaned daily, this campground is not well maintained. Sites are small; large rigs had significant trouble navigating the curved roads & trees (this park works for modest-sized rigs); several rundown rigs were using the max 10-night stay; several feral (?) cats. Asphalt pads in disrepair. Thorny wild berry plants encroaching into site & long overdue for trimming. Lots of air traffic noise from nearby Sea-Tac airport. No garbage cans anywhere except at restroom. Beautiful path to Puget Sound shore. Not worth the fee & hassle of the required online reservation procedure. - Taco stand

A wonderful state marine park. Prices have risen pretty high. There are a few sites with good electric and water, but most are without hookups. This is one of the best managed parks in Washington. Hookup sites are $35, dry are $30. There are 22 sites and a group site. Some are quite near Puget Sound. - PALPJL
Aug 2011 - $22.00
A beautiful little park on Hartstine Island in Puget Sound about 14 miles from Shelton. The place is just lovely and taken very good care of. There is no dump station- closest one is not near. There is water available and the public rest rooms are very nice. Showers take quarters- 50¢ for 3 minutes. This is not real close to anything, but if you are a boater or want to use your kayak this is a wonderful spot. - PALPJL

Great location by American Lake. Tent and RV camping. RVers need to make reservations early as this park stays full. Larger RVs fit well on "C" row but might have issues by the water on "A" row or in short spaces on "B" row. "A" row has the best view and access to the beach and river but, you have everyone and their dogs walking thru your camp area. The goose poop around the "A" row area is something else to put up with. Community satellite dishes for DirectTV and Dish are available at most sites but not a guarantee. Tree coverage limits satellite reception at most sites. Mostly level gravel sites with grassy areas, picnic tables and fire rings. Nice place to stay. We stayed here in a 43' motorhome. Recommend taking exit 122 off I-5 for easy access. - RPM-Traveler
Jun 2018 - $16.00
Glad we called for reservations, even for 1 night. Great CG right on American Lake. Our site was right on the water, but there are also many ducks and geese, which leave many 'land mines' in the grass at water's edge. Sites seem to be reasonably level, ours required no blocks. Plenty of room for trailer and tow vehicle. Didn't see all the sites, but very happy with ours. Beach area sites are 'sunny', others are well shaded. - Nevada Nick
Aug 2016 - $16.00
Tough to rate this park. The location on American Lake is beautiful and quiet with shade from huge trees. The view (if you're lucky enough to have one) can be lovely. Nice place to walk dogs (on leash only). The sites are a mix of good to bad. The back row up on the hill has 50 amp, the other sites have 30 amp (although the office person who made our reservation said there was 30 amp only). There were only four 5th wheels in the park which tells us those with 5th wheels probably avoid it. We have a 38' 5th wheel and will not return unless we can get on the back row (C sites) or Site A-1 because the others are just too hard to back into. Most of the other sites are too short for big rigs, but a Class A can just manage to fit if they aren't huge. Our 5th wheel stuck out in the road a little and another 5th wheel toyhauler stuck out at least 5 feet. The A and B row sites are too close together. If you can back your rig close enough to the hook-ups you can either park your car next to your RV or you can use your awning and picnic table. One or the other, not both. We could do neither because our site was so hard to get into we couldn't get right up to the hook-ups. We didn't have enough room on either side to put the picnic table or our truck. Our side view was of an old Class C in poor condition. The sites are a mix of fairly level to very unlevel, all gravel and not kept up well. Rows A and B are like being in a gravel parking lot. If you come in on a weekend you can pay by check or cash and leave it in a dropbox. On weekdays you have to hunt for the office in Bldg 16 which is in the coffee shop/credit union building with no number on it. The laundry is clean with 2 household-size washers and dryers but no coin machine. The primitive campsites are at the opposite end of the campground from the bathrooms, an convenient walk. At $16 per day it was a good deal but not good enough for us to return unless we got a decent site. - all4pets

Very nice park. JBLM is a huge military base and has just about everything you would need. The RV Park is great with lots of privacy and space between each site with nature in between. It is clean, quiet, and just plain appealing. There is I-5 road noise but it is a like a constant hum from tires on the road that you don't hear after a while. The utilities are well placed and worked just fine. The roads and sites are asphalt and they are each tucked into their own little space. There is no Wifi. I always take a point off for lack of Wifi. I believe in todays world Wifi should be available - period. You can book at this RV park with complete confidence. - jomark

The combined Ft Lewis-McChord base is very large, so make sure you have good driving directions to this RV Park. There is also RV parking in the McChord portion of the base and at the National Guard base. This one is Ft Lewis-North. Even though I specified that my rig was a 32' Motorhome, they had assigned me a pull-thru spot made for a 19' maximum unit. However, I was able to wiggle my way in. This park is very convenient to I-5 and is about 20 minutes south of Tacoma. Of course, you also have the convenience of one of the largest commissaries I've ever been in and the new "Big BX" is under construction right now. My spot was full hook-up. Cable TV is offered but I never could get it to work on my TV's for some reason. It was ok, we usually watch Roku anyway. I would definitely stay here again! - Steve Lewis
Jul 2017 - $30.00
Very convenient to I-5, Tacoma, Seattle,& other scenic sites. The setting is on American Lake which is a beautiful and sometimes busy lake. A great camp host assisted us with getting CATV connected, which was good because with all the overgrown trees there is no way we could have gotten satellite service! Our pull thru site was very long and spacious. The office staff was very helpful. That is as positive as I can get. Trees, brush, weeds are completely out of control. Bring some shears to cut the blackberry bushes back from your site. Laundry was barely tolerable. The washers had not been cleaned and made you feel that you needed to run a clorox rinse before you put your clothes in. In the middle of my drying cycle, while I was waiting outside, the cleaning crew came in and blocked the door with furniture and and "closed" sign for cleaning! The bathrooms were clean, but the lounge and laundry could use some attention. Do not reserve a lake front site expecting privacy. Especially site # 301, which appears to be a nice, long, pull thru lake front site seems to be the public access for the entire park to the lake. Adults, children, dogs, bikes are constantly going between, thru, around and sometimes OVER you to get to the water. PILES of chairs, floats, trash, dog and goose poop everywhere. While there is suppose to be no swimming except across the lake in designated swim area, that is not enforced. Nor are there any signs or attempts to make a public walkway if this is indeed not included with the site. NOISY party boats with music blasting and what appeared to be "over served" partiers very loud on the lake at times. On top of that row 300 is a one way "path" with all the sites facing away from the lake with hookups on the lake side and your door facing the street! I did notice a large number of what appeared to be full time, active duty homesteading there, even though a 2 week limit is stated. Totally needs some decent management!! - Gypsy Duo
Jun 2017 - $30.00
Park continues to not be taken care of. Weeds and trash everywhere. Asked desk clerk about a problem with a site and she said (without prompting) that she had only been in the park once on the day she started!! Stay there every summer on our way to Oak Harbor, WA., and it just seems to get worse every year. Camp night time host was out with a weed wacker but one person can't be expected to make any difference with that mess. - Jim DR

Big rig friendly with level sites but overgrown on road driving to sites. Hard to find campground and GPS was not correct. Be sure to ask direction or follow email. Closed on Sunday and Monday and people in office was not very helpful. No WiFi and could not get satellite because of trees. No dog park but lots of grass to walk dog. Storage at campground was convenient and $5.00 a day. Convenient to commissary, exchange and library and dog kennel. - Fulltimersrv
Jun 2019 - $28.00
This was our third stay here, location good (very little to choose from in Seattle/Tacoma area); close to family, and easy access. Easy to get to park from any of the base gates, but for our 45ft, towing, the Logistics gate at McChord Field works best; a base map is helpful. Best to disconnect before entering park, and trees (which are kept well trimmed back and up) require some careful maneuvering, but it can be done successfully, even us very big rigs! There are several sites large enough for a big rig. Plenty of space around most sites, lots of fir trees, so potentially lots of tree debris at certain times of the year. Sites basically level, with occasional uneven pavement from roots. Being close to an airfield, there is the occasional airplane noise (doesn't bother us), but none this time, due to construction work on the runway. Facilities are nice and clean. Friendly, helpful staff. We noticed this time: garbage bin emptied, but not the recycling, was overflowing. - TD 1981-Navy Vets
Aug 2018 - $28.00
We were looking for a spot in the Seattle area and they were tough to find. We looked at the reviews of all three famcamps at Jpint Base Lewis McChord. This seemed the best. The reviews are pretty limited and old, so thought it was time to update them. First, the directions worked perfectly and got us to the main gate at McChord Field. We made it through the gate with no problem in our 35' Class A Motorhome with a toad. Talking with others here, they did as well. So do not worry about getting in. There are two lanes and no barriers. They do curve, but not an issue. Plenty of room to get through the gate. Just follow the directions on this page and no problem Next, the setting is tall ones and forested. Very pretty and a break from the urbaness of the surrounding city. That said, the roads are somewhat narrow but very navigatable. They seem to put all the bigger rigs in the FHU upper loop, sites 20-37. These are all back in sites. Not very level. We had to use blocks under the tires and jacks. Many of the sites have rear sewer that is up hill! Kind of a pain but very workable with some patience. There are lots of trees, but we and others we spoke with had no issues with needing to trim. The sites looked like they had been tended for foliage. Each site has a picnic table and grill. There is very limited connectivity in the upper loop. No way you will get any satellite with all the trees. There is no cable. We did get some local OTA channels, but not all the major ones. Some sites might be better than others. We had good usable Verizon coverage for both voice and data. Their wi-if is pretty much useless. You can only get it at the office, where the router is, and sometimes at the clubhouse, which is nearby. We have a WiFi booster and could not even pick it up. There are no repeaters in the Park, and the bandwidth up and don is in the single digits. Not an issue if you are here just camping. - Magnum34

Stayed 2 nites. Park in general was pretty neat. RV part was the tightest we have ever had. Site was long, but for sure with our slides out we had at best 12" on either side between rigs. 99% of RV seemed to be long term. The water connection is extremely low in the ground. - Jhl
Jun 2018 - $45.00
Rv park is in a converted mobile home park and is set up as a transient park where most people are returned snowbirds or live and work out of there. The sewer smell permeates the air throughout the park. The wifi wasnt strong enough so had to come sit on a bench by the pool to work on my tablet. Traffic is so congested it is so hard to enter or leave the park. I'll never come back - Sarge936
Apr 2018 - $55.00
This park is no way worth the price, we ended up paying $56.18 a night and that included the Good Sam discount plus tax. They do not have weekly rates. The sites are not very wide you are stacked in pretty tight. There needs to be more gravel in each site. There was notices being put out that people needed to pick up after their dogs and that was a fact. We had one more night to stay for our week but on that day a truck came in and starting spraying each site from front to back and side to side with roundup week killer and they didn't care if it got on your water hose or cables this is not a good practice that stuff can be dangerous we have a little dog and certainly didn't want him to get sick or us. When we complained to the office all they would say is well we have never had a problem before so no help there. It basically fell on deaf ears. We were so upset over this practice we up and left that day before they could spray our site. We lost one night of money but for safety reasons it was worth it. Never will we stay there again and do not recommend this park at all. This park is mostly full time residents which for the most park of very nice. - roamer3

Jun 2014 - $25.00
I rated this low. For $25/night it had to be the worst WA state park we have ever stayed in. Sites 1-4 are the ones where supposedly the large RVs should be. They are as close together as any commercial campground, so no privacy, noise from your neighbor's generator, etc. There were other pull through sites that would have worked. The website just didn't show they were available for larger rigs, but we saw a RV larger than ours on one of them, That would have been a much more pleasant spot with a little more privacy. $25/night for no hooks and no working dump station felt like it was priced too high. You also get charged extra if you are not a WA state resident and want to make a reservation. Unlike most Western WA state parks, there is little or no vegetation between any of the RV sites in this park. Only sites with any privacy are in the tent or very small class B RV area. You are in the flight path of SeaTac so you do get that noise. On the plus side, nice hiking trail in the park and easy walk to the beach area. Probably not a park we'll stay in again. - DRFink
Jul 2013 - $23.00
Nice woodsy park between Seattle and Tacoma. We were in a 45' motorhome and except for one tight turn because of a parked camper sticking out, I was able to navigate thru the park and to the campsite with care, but no problem. The showers do not work (was told by camp host). The place is a bit overgrown. I had to trim a tree as not to scrape going into my site. Site 1 - 4 are best for big rigs. Easy to back in to and easy to pull out. No hookups (as advertised) and a good price. The beach is great. A nice paved path along the waterfront is nice. A good restaurant called Wally's Chowder House a couple of miles away was wonderful. The park is great for camping. Just not very well maintained with the lack of budget in the WA State Park System. - JoeVinnie
Jul 2011 - $22.00
The park was extremely well maintained. There were many trails to explore, and the beach access had excellent low-tide pooling for investigation. Our site right next to the creek was wonderful. Detractions included the airline traffic heading to/from Seatac (pretty minor, but noticeable) and the dry camping (offset by running a generator to recharge batteries). - bradrf
