Well after 5 years we have decided to get another sheltie, so next wednesday we pick up the new dog. The breeder has not decided yet on which dog we will get but said it will probably be the little black & white one.

We felt so fortunate that our last sheltie traveled so well. Last weekend we took 3 hr course for new owners of puppys and next month we are enrolled in puppy training classes. We hope to have our new 4 legged camper on track for our summer camping trips! Back to reading pet policies on campgrounds!

I'm glad you enrolled in puppy training classes. We didn't and it took quite a while for our dog to train us. I'm sure she would have been more pleased had we taken the class but she's happy with us now. We still sometimes make a mistake here and there but she is fairly patient with us. :)

That's great Mike!!! No doubt you will enjoy many miles of happy travels with your new travel companion. We took our 6-/12 lb mini chihuahua with us years ago when we first got into RVing and she has ruled the coach from day one. She knows when we are about to start a trip and she gets really excited. She is a super traveler also and loves to just sit and watch the scenery passing by. We couldn't see traveling without her. Shelties are great dogs and are pretty smart also. He/She will have you two trained in no time and will rule the roost so be ready to roll over and do what she tells you to..............:D Let the good times begin................

    All the best, Terry...............(aka BankShot)

I need to get more info on the demeanor and typical behavior of shelties. I haven't been able to have a dog due to living in apartments, but have been planning on getting a medium to slightly large dog if I move to the campground. I need one that will be friendly with all the customers and with animals (cg has a mountain-style petting zoo).

I didn't know that it is the same as a Shetland Sheepdog. It would be great with animals. They are in a large fenced area that includes a pond, lots of vegetation, and a hilly wooded area, and a heated/cooled barn that has stairs so the goats go can go up on the flat roof. I imagine a sheltie dog would have some fun herding the goats around the diverse terrain.

The webpage gives me the impression that one might not do well with the all the customers going inside and outside, and kids running around, if I keep it with me when working in the lodge (which will be a lot of the time). I wonder if raising one from a small puppy in that environment would prevent the sensitivity.

No doubt acclimating the pup to the lodge traffic right from the start would be the best way to go.

Years ago a neighbor of ours had a problem with their Sheltie when it kept trying to herd their two young children away from the side of the road where they were waiting for the school bus. They finally had to secure the dog in a bedroom on school mornings... :)

    Good article

Some of the stuff mentioned was spot on with our past sheltie, herding, and shedding comes to mind first, also our dog developed health issues earlier in her life. Somethings that didn't fit the sheltie profile, our past dog wasn't much of a barker. We had few problems with separation anxiety as our dog gladly accepted bribes (treats) for her stays alone.

by all means I'm no dog expert but my feeling on this is as long as they get plenty of exercise with playing with their dog toys those toys become their main interest. Though our past dog liked to herd it was mostly during play time when the kids wanted her to chase them. She much preferred her frisbee time.

Will out next sheltie be the same? probably not so we will roll with the punches :)
