Elephant Butte Lake State Park, South Monticello Campground, Elephant Butte, New Mexico

Date of Stay: October, 2019 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

Great sites overlooking Elephant Butte Lake. The sites are large, level and very well spaced. All sites have a canopy over the picnic table. The utilities are in good shape. This campground is more spacious than the other State Park campgrounds in the area and is separated by distance from the restaurants and activity in the Elephant Butte town area. There is a small playground, but the campground seems better suited for adults. It is very quiet (and dark) at night. The camper restroom facility is clean, centrally located and adequate. There is no sewer connection at the sites, but there is a good dump station. There are no trees at the sites. Verizon cell service and OTA TV coverage is good. The interior roads are wide and easy to navigate. New Mexico could do a little better with the signage entering the park, but that was a minor inconvenience. We camped at Elephant Butte Lake State Park, South Monticello Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Redstone Campground, Redstone, Colorado

Date of Stay: October, 2019 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

Forest Service CG in the White River National Forest. Sites are generally level, most with a large sitting area. The sites and roads are gravel. The CG is located deep within a valley, so there is no cell service or OTA TV stations available. However, in the small quaint town of Redstone, there is free public WiFi available anywhere along the main street. Redstone is about 1 mile away from the campground. Bear boxes are provided at each campsite for storing stoves and ice chests. This is a very peaceful and rustic campground, however the bathroom facilities are clean and modern. There is a little road noise from the adjacent hiway, but traffic is light and the noise was not objectionable. Basic groceries and a few restaurants are available in Redstone. There is not a dump station at the campground. Some sites have shade, but most do not. The view from the campground of the surrounding mountains is stunning! We camped at Redstone Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Heaton Bay/ White River National Forest, Frisco, Colorado

Date of Stay: October, 2019 - $28.00
Overall Rating:

Forest Service campground in the beautiful White River National Forest. Our site was flat and level with excellent spacing between our site and others around us. Hook-ups are water and power only, no sewer. Many, but not all, sites will accommodate larger rigs so check the campground map. The toilets are vault toilets, but they are clean and well maintained. The interior roads are easy to navigate. There is some road noise from Dillon Dam Road, but it is not noticeable inside the camper. There is much to do in the area and this makes a good base camp for visiting the nearby restaurants, fishing, hiking etc. The biggest downside of this campground is that it does not have an onsite dump station. There is a good city dump station available for $5 on the road to Breckenridge. This is about 5-6 miles away. The exact location is known to many campers at the campground or business owners in the area. We camped at Heaton Bay/ White River National Forest in a Fifth Wheel.

Kodachrome Basin State Park, Cannonville, Utah

Date of Stay: October, 2019 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

It's understandable why this park stays booked up (make your reservations as early as you can). Not only is the area beautiful, but the park itself matches the area. It's well laid out and well maintained. The sites are generally long and in good shape. The only thing I noticed was that some of the "pull-through" sites were not "pull-through", but rather "pull-over" sites. These had slideouts projecting into the road. Best to check the campground map so you won't be surprised. There is no cell phone coverage or OTA TV stations available, but the beauty of the area overrides these minor negative points. Great hiking with varied trails for all skill levels. The park is not close to much, so stock up before you get there. The campground showers are the best I've ever seen. The park has a good laundromat. There are not many lights at night and night star viewing is excellent. We camped at Kodachrome Basin State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Page Lake Powell Campground, Page, Arizona

Date of Stay: October, 2019 - $60.00
Overall Rating:

Contrary to some reviews, Page Lake Powell CG is not on the shores of Lake Powell. It is a fairly large commercial CG conveniently located in Page. The sites are flat and level, although they are close together. The FHU utilities worked well and their cable TV feed was good, but their WiFi failed miserably. There are also OTA TV stations covering the area. The restrooms are clean and fairly modern. There are many monthly site campers, but these seem to be well kept and uncluttered. Sites are provided with a picnic table and campers have access to the indoor pool. Campfires are not allowed at the sites, which is an interesting rule given that while we there the staff burned garbage behind a maintenance shed at the rear of the campground emitting an obnoxious odor. This CG is adequate as a base camp while visiting attractions in the area. We camped at Page Lake Powell Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Tours are available for the Glen Canyon Dam for a reasonable cost. The tours are on a "time appointment" when busy so check in before you want to go. The Horseshoe Bend river overlook cost is $10 for parking (City of Page charge) plus a 1 mile hike to get to the river.

Fort Griffin State Park & Historic Site, Albany, Texas

Date of Stay: October, 2019 - $28.00
Overall Rating:

This is a hidden gem. This park is operated by the Texas Historical Commission. Consequently, it is not available for booking on the Texas State Park reservation website or Reserve America. You have to call them (number given above on this website) to make a reservation. We stayed here on a weekend when all State Parks in the area were booked. The sites are flat and level and well spaced. The interior roads are gravel or asphalt. Sites are a mix of FHU, water/power or dry. There is not much traffic in the park and there is no supplemental lighting at night. The park is home to the official "Texas longhorn steer herd" and they can be seen in an adjacent pasture. The old preserved Fort Griffin, across the road from the campsites, is well worth touring. Ask for golf cart when you check in at the visitor center to tour the Fort. The nearest grocery store is in Albany. We camped at Fort Griffin State Park & Historic Site in a Fifth Wheel.

Lyman Lake State Park, Saint Johns, Arizona

Date of Stay: October, 2019 - $28.00
Overall Rating:

Large flat and level sites with good spacing between sites. Each campsite has a covered picnic table and concrete "windbreak" wall adjacent to the site. Most sites have an unobstructed view of the lake and are long enough to accommodate any size rig. This CG is fairly remote in an unpopulated area. There is a convenient Ranger Station and camp store. There is a beach and designated swimming area. There are short hiking trails and an historical area (Indian Ruins) at Rattlesnake Point which is interesting. There is no cell service in the area and no OTA TV. We camped at Lyman Lake State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Twiltley Branch COE, Collinsville, Mississippi

Date of Stay: October, 2019 - $10.00
Overall Rating:

Well maintained COE CG. All but a few sites are waterfront sites. The campsite level is very close to the lake level which makes launching a kayak or canoe easy and convenient. The interior roads are very good, although there are a few tight turns in the loops of the campground, as evidenced by the scars on the trees. Site spacing is excellent and all sites are flat, level and generous in size. Security in the CG is good; the front gate is locked at night. There are several OTA TV channels. There are no sewer sites in the park and the restroom is separated from the Black Gum loop camping area; many people use use "blue boy" containers for extended stays. The dump station is high on a hill, but is in good shape. Favorite sites are 46, 47. We camped at Twiltley Branch COE in a Fifth Wheel.

Tyler State Park, Tyler, Texas

Date of Stay: October, 2019 - $28.00
Overall Rating:

Generally good, flat and level sites with generous spacing, although some of the pull-through sites are a little short. This is an older park and some of the roads have been paved over leaving a deep shoulder in some places. Utilities are good. Check-in was efficient. Many of the sites along the lake shore in area 2, the Lake View area, are actually separated from the water by high reeds and bushes. One site, 217, has direct access to the water and a beautiful view. Sites 214, 215 and 216 have an obstructed view of the lake. Bathrooms are very solid construction and act as a shelter for severe weather. Security in the CG is good and there are many OTA TV stations available providing coverage from all the major networks; no WiFi. Kayak and boat rentals are available from the park. Good maps are provided at check-in, although we had to ask for a hiking trail map. We camped at Tyler State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Goulding's Lodge & Campground, Oljato-Monument Valley, Utah

Date of Stay: October, 2019 - $60.00
Overall Rating:

Good destination CG for visiting Monument Valley. The sites are close together and some are not level. The interior roads are well marked but tight. Most sites are pull-throughs. There are a limited number of long sites. Goulding's operates many enterprises in the area - grocery store, gas station, car wash, gift shop, restaurant, etc.; all seem to be priced high. The CG WiFi does not work well, however the cable TV feed does. There are no OTA stations serving the area. There are fire rings provided, but you hope your neighbor won't use his because the sites are so close. We camped at Goulding's Lodge & Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Goosenecks State Park, Mexican Hat, Utah

Date of Stay: October, 2019 - $10.00
Overall Rating:

My rating is for a dry camping location and facilities. This is an absolutely beautiful area and a boondocker's dream location. The campground can be windy. There are two modern vault toilet restroom buildings in good shape. No power or water at the sites. Some sites are equipped with metal fire rings. There are 4 sites in the main area along the rim of the river, then other sites further along the rim. Access roads are paved and part of the camping area is paved. The road beyond the first 4 sites are dirt/gravel, but are still accessible by a 2wd vehicle with good ground clearance. Goosenecks is remote and there is no cell phone coverage. Access to the park is $5 or $10 if you are camping. We camped at Goosenecks State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Carlsbad KOA, Carlsbad, New Mexico

Date of Stay: October, 2019 - $44.00
Overall Rating:

This KOA seems a little above average for a typical KOA. It's fine for an overnight stay. All utilities worked well and the cable feed was good. Fairly good WiFi coverage in the campground, but the internet service was very poor. Interior roads and site parking is gravel. The roads are wide and easy to navigate. The sites are flat and level. Some sites have a brick patio (for a higher price). Site spacing is generous compared to most private CGs, with a little grass (15'?) between sites. The basic site is equipped with a picnic table and firepit. The 24 hour laundry room is modern and the equipment seemed to be in good working order. There are an adequate number of washers and dryers. There is road noise noticeable when sitting outside, but not loud enough to be objectionable. Security seems good and the CG appears to be in a safe area. We camped at Carlsbad KOA in a Fifth Wheel.

Canyonlands RV Resort & Campground, Moab, Utah

Date of Stay: October, 2019 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

Typical private campground - not a destination within itself, but a good place to park while attending attractions in the area. This CG is centrally located and within walking distance to many good restaurants, bars and tourist shops. It is about 4 miles from Arches. The CG has a fair number of trees for shade and the operations seem efficient. Power/water and sewer connections are good. There are many channels on the campground cable TV, but the quality is poor with a snowy picture on all channels. The free internet is surprisingly fast with good WiFi coverage, but apparently the service provider to the CG is unreliable. Over a four day period, the CG cable and internet went out several times for hours at a time. Dogs are allowed on a leash, but the "doggie park" is s very small corner of the park that is dirt. The parking spaces are flat and level concrete and the sitting spaces are gravel. Spacing is very close. Longer rigs are squeezed in, but towed vehicles and towing vehicles have to be parked across the sites. There is a laundry that is open all night and convenience/camping store that is open late. The CG backs up to high school football and baseball fields where there was some morning and mid-day noise, but it was not objectionable. Friday nights during football season might be another matter. A picnic table is provided, campfires are not allowed. All-in-all, this is a CG that has a convenient location for activities in the area and serves that purpose fairly well. No complaints. We camped at Canyonlands RV Resort & Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Maumelle COE, Little Rock, Arkansas

Date of Stay: September, 2019 - $22.00
Overall Rating:

This campground was closed for a period of time after the floods of mid-2019. There is evidence of repairs that were made due to the flooding - the sites along the river now have concrete borders (instead of wooden timbers) surrounding the sitting area, with new gravel as a base. The sites further from the river do not seem to have been affected and still have wooden timbers to provide a border for the site, although it appears new gravel has been added to these also. Most sites are very level, and shaded or partially shaded. A few sites in the interior of the campground are sloped front to back. Site spacing is typical for a COE park, but the park is big so there are a lot of shaded, grassy "common areas" for throwing a Frisbee or walking your dog. This park is bicycle friendly and has a fairly long paved nature trail. Check in was quick and to the point; the park hosts were friendly and helpful. Most of the riverside sites are about 40 feet from the water's edge. Makes for a great grassy sitting area next to the river for watching pleasure boats. However, the grassy area behind the sites are separated from the river by 3-6 feet of weeds and growth that keep it from being suitable for kayak or canoe launching. There is a boat ramp in the campground. Site lengths are accurate on the Recreation.gov website. Longer sites for big rigs are on the interior of the campground. Sites are electric and water only, with a few full hook-up exceptions (see the tips comment). Interior roads are wide and in good shape; easy to navigate. There is a fairly heavy tree canopy, so satellite reception is 50/50 for a fixed dish, but likely OK if you have a portable dish. OTA TV is good, Verizon coverage is 5 out of 5. We camped at Maumelle COE in a Fifth Wheel.

Cheyenne Mountain State Park, Colorado Springs, Colorado

Date of Stay: September, 2019 - $41.00
Overall Rating:

Well maintained, State Park in a great location overlooking Colorado Springs, CO. The Raptor Glen section is the highest in the campground and the nighttime views are stunning. Each site is concrete with a large gravel sitting area. There is no shade at the sites. Firepits and picnic tables are provided and firewood is available from a host ($5). The interior roads are asphalt and are wide and easy to navigate. There is a laundromat with good equipment convenient to several of the campground areas. The campground has many hiking trails, however, the GPS location printed on markers along the trails does not coincide with handheld GPS devices. Never-the-less, the trails are well marked and easy to follow. We camped at Cheyenne Mountain State Park in a Fifth Wheel.
